How Can I Make Cold Brew Coffee At Home

Why Does A Dedicated Cold Brew Coffee Maker Make A Better Batch Of Cold Brew Coffee

How to make Cold Brew Coffee – At Home

A cold brew coffee maker is necessary for two simple reasons. It helps you properly:

  • 1) disperse the water into the grounds, and
  • 2) filter out the coffee grounds.

The cold brew coffee maker we use at home is this OXO Cold Brew Coffee Maker, and it makes an incredibly clean and strong batch of cold brew coffee.

A cold brew coffee concentrate maker will help you disperse the water over the coffee in a more even manner

I’ll explain how to make cold brew coffee without a cold brew coffee maker later, but I’ll touch on a couple of key points now.

First, you want to disperse the water over your coffee grounds so that they get wet in an even manner to help with the “bloom” .;The OXO cold brew coffee concentrate maker, for example, has a “rain cap” that helps you pour water evenly over the coffee grounds.

You can better drain/filter your cold brew coffee concentrate from the used coffee grounds with a dedicated cold brew coffee concentrate maker

Second, when you are draining your cold brew coffee concentrate through a filter, you want to avoid agitating the coffee grounds by moving around too much. Doing so will release bitter compounds into the coffee concentrate.

Thus, most cold brew coffee makers account for this by allowing you to transfer the concentrate with minimal movement.

With the OXO cold brew coffee maker, you literally put the coffee container on top of the stand and flip a switch. The cold brew coffee concentrate drains right into the serving/storage pot.

How Long Does Cold Brew Keep

As a general rule of thumb, cold brew is best enjoyed within a week for best quality. After that, it starts to develop a sour flavor.

If you want to make larger batches, you can freeze what you won’t use within a week. Freeze it in a glass canning jar and then just place it in the fridge to thaw when you want it!

Why Is Cold Brew Coffee More Expensive

Can You Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home? The Best Recipe ...

When you hit up your favorite café, youll likely notice that a cup of cold brew is more expensive than the same sized cup of freshly brewed hot coffee. Why is it so much more expensive? Two factors: Time and materials.

Cold brew coffee steeps for anywhere between 12 and 48 hours, and as we all know time equals money. Also, cold brew coffee requires a greater volume of ground coffee than drip, French press or pour-over coffee. Between the extra time and extra beans, cold brew just costs more to make, so thats why youll pay more.

How To Serve Cold Brewed Coffee

Cold brewed coffee can be served iced or piping hot, dealer’s choice. You follow the same method for making the coffee either way, and then either serve it over ice or warm it up in the microwave for a hot cup. When warming it for hot coffee, I often add a splash of water to dilute the coffee before warming. But this, again, is a matter of personal taste.

Too strong for your taste? Iced coffee does make a particularly strong cuppa joe! If you’re serving it iced, the ice is meant to melt and dilute the coffee a little. If it’s still a bit too much for you, just dilute your glass with some water or milk to taste.

Ready to give cold brew coffee a try? Below is everything you need to know to make your own batch at home.

Equipment: What You Need To Get Started

Grinder:

Youll need a grinder that can produce a coarser grind size than a standard espresso grinder. If you already have a retail grinder, like a Ditting KR805 or a Mahlkonig EK43 then youre all set. If not, we think the Baratza Forte or the Breville Smart Grinder Pro are a good choices theyre relatively affordable, they dont take up much space and can be used for grinding espresso, aeropress & any other brew methods you use.

If a grinder is out of the question, then you can use ground coffee just ask to get it ground on the coarse side of a filter grind.

Brewer:

There are literally dozens of cold brewers available for the coffee professional. The easiest way to get started is the classic toddy brewer , its cheap, functional and difficult to break.

Having said that, if youre more of a DIY kind of person, you can get great results brewing in a saucepan and filtering the grounds twice: once with a sieve & once with a paper filter.

The results will be just as good with this hack method, but the process is a little easier with a dedicated device like the Toddy.

Filtered Water:

Yes, water quality makes a massive difference. The team from our Coffee Science & Education Centre have done some in depth work on the ideal water for brewing coffee take a look.

Suffice to say, water straight out of the tap is unlikely to give great results. If you can use the water that has been filtered for your espresso machine, thats a better place to start.

What You Need To Make Cold Brew Coffee

It doesnt take many ingredients to make cold brew coffee, only two to be exact.

  • water I prefer distilled water when it comes to making cold brew. Ive settled on this after many batches. I find that distilled water works best as cold extractor and is free of almost all diluted solids. Distilled water really captures sugars that tap water does not. Can you still use tap water? Yes, taste is always subjective, but over the years I have had the best results with distilled.
  • medium-coarse ground coffee getting the grind is really important and keeps the cold brew from turning bitter while it steeps. Youll want the coarseness to mimic that of raw sugar. If grinding the beans yourself, its best to do it in small batches.

Taste Flavor And Aroma Of Cold Brew

How To Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home

Brewing coffee at lower temperatures brings out a whole host of flavors and aromas that are not typically present in hot brewed coffee.;

Naturally sweeter, and with far fewer bitter and astringent notes, cold brew coffee is prized for its unique fullness and richness of flavor. This can only be achieved by brewing coffee grounds at low temperatures for long periods.;

The highly sought after taste, flavor and aroma of cold brew coffee is again heightened when served cold. This is why you will often see cold brew served over ice, or mixed with cold filtered water or milk.

If you do not keep your cold brew refrigerated, many of these unique qualities that make cold brew so special will not shine through. Taste will be compromised, flavor will be muted, and aroma will be dampened.;

What Is The Best Water For Cold Brewing Coffee

You will get a tasty and clean cold brew coffee if you filter the water you use to make it. Avoid distilled water because its low in minerals. Pure mineral water should be also avoided because of too many minerals.

Low or high minerals in water can affect the taste of your cold brew. Depending on where you live, you can use tap water to make your cold brew. If it tastes good to drink, then you can use it. All in all, filtered water remains the best option.

Best Budget: Primula Burke 16

What We Love: Simple and easy use, great value

What We Don’t Love: Takes a long time to brew

While the Primula Burke Cold Brew Coffee Maker is affordable, it rivals cold-brew coffee makers that cost double its price. This little coffee maker is made with heat-resistant borosilicate glass, with a silicone lid, and has a capacity of 6 cups.

This cold-brew coffee maker uses pot-style brewing, where a basket of grounds is immersed in a brew pot. The mesh filter captures nearly all of the sediment for a smooth brew. The bottom of the filter unscrews so you can dump the grounds for easy cleanup, and both the filter and carafe are dishwasher safe. The biggest drawback? Brew time is 24 hours, so you need to plan ahead.;

How you can make cold brew without a coffee maker

Cold brew coffee is not just coffee served cold. The thing that makes it cold brew coffee is that the brewing process itself happens without heat. Instead of steeping the grounds in hot water, you steep them in cold water for a lot longer.

But why would you want to wait longer for your coffee, you ask? Because the result is noticeably different and, some say, better.

Almondmilk Honey Vanilla Cold Brew

At Starbucks, you can find a Honey Almondmilk Cold Brew, but I decided to add Vanilla Syrup to it, as it gets even better that way.

Its one of the most popular coffee drinks among my readers because of the delightful combination of flavors.

Here are the ingredients that youre going to need to make an Almondmilk Honey Vanilla Cold Brew iced coffee:

  • Unsweetened Almondmilk 4 fl. oz. .I recommend using lukewarm almondmilk, as the honey doesnt dissolve quite well in cold milk.
  • Cold Brew Concentrate 2 fl. oz. to 3 fl. oz.
  • Honey 1 tablespoon .
  • Vanilla Syrup 1 tablespoon. Again, Im using Monins Vanilla Syrup which I linked earlier. If you dont have it at hand, feel free to use vanilla extract to add flavor.
  • Ice cubes.

So heres how to make the Almondmilk Honey Vanilla Cold Brew Drink:

  • Add the honey and the vanilla syrup to the almondmilk.
  • Use a drink mixer to combine the ingredients well and froth the milk.
  • Pour the flavored almondmilk in a glass over ice cubes.
  • Add the cold brew concentrate on top.
  • As you see, if you follow my directions, you will get to make an aesthetically pleasing and yummy cold brew beverage with a nice layered appearance.

    Of course, before you take a sip, stir your cold brew coffee drink to be able to enjoy its flavors to the fullest.

    Measure Out Your Coffee And Water

    When making cold brew coffee a 1:5 ratio of coffee to water is optimal. This ratio will give you a perfect balance of strength and flavors. If you find it is too weak you can adjust this moving forwards.

    The easiest way to measure your coffee and water is using a scale. Always make sure you have zeroed your scale once you have placed your container on top for accurate measurements.
