How To Make Cold Brew Coffee In A French Press

How to Make COLD BREW COFFEE (iced coffee)

If using a French press, once your coffee is done, gently press the mesh down on the grounds to filter them out. Pour the coffee into a jar or bottle for holding. French press cold brew makes less mess, so if you plan to brew cold regularly, it’s worth investing in the coffee maker.

With other kinds of containers, put a filter or cheesecloth in a sieve on the mouth of another container. Gradually pour coffee through the filter.

Or, before you brew, use a rubber band to bundle grounds in a coffee filter or a piece of cheesecloth. Put in the packets and cover the container with plastic wrap. Just pitch the packets when you’re done.

Is Cold Brew Better Than Iced Coffee

As your coffee sits longer, its flavor is stronger. Serving cold brew with ice would be an A-OK idea since it tends to be stronger. Since cold brew uses more time to extract coffees oils, sugars, and caffeine from it rather than heat, a glassful of it will typically be less acidic and bitter than a glassful of iced tea.

What Is The Perfect Ratio Of Beans To Water

I find that a ratio of 1:4 for grounds to water is the perfect ratio for making cold brew. For me, this typically looks like 1 cup of beans, ground, to 4 cups of water. This ratio can be used in any amount 2 cups grounds to 8 cups water, etc.

Because measuring in weight is always more accurate, I use about 82 grams of beans for 4 cups or 946 milliliters of water. The amount of whole beans to grounds is one-to-one, meaning the weight of the whole beans will be the same as when they are ground.

Of course, for you to make the perfect cold brew according to your preferences, I recommend playing around with the ratios as you experiment. The 1:4 ratio is a great starting point but if you decide you like it stronger, try more grounds to water.

Note: only about 3 1/2 cups fit in a large mason jar, so I use about 3/4 cup beans to 3 cups water to stay within the ratio. I will also use 1 cup of beans and simply fill the water to the top of the jar, which results in a slightly stronger concentration of cold brew because it has a bit less water.

Instant Iced Coffee Recipe

  • Dissolve one packet of Waka coffee into about 3 or 4 tablespoons of room temperature filtered water
  • Stir until all coffee crystals are dissolved
  • Add around 8 ounces of cold filtered water
  • Stir and add desired amount of ice
  • Taste and flavor with cream and sugar

If you didnt make liquid sugar sweetener beforehand, you can easily dissolve some sugar in a little hot water and add it to the iced coffee.

Because the coffee is cold to begin with the hot water wont make a noticeable difference. This is what I do and it works great. Because WAKA coffee has citrus flavor notes I dont find it needs much sugar.

Can Cold Brew Or Iced Coffee Be Served Hot

This is a little trick that many people are not aware of: cold brew coffee can be heated up!

The name cold brew simply refers to the brewing method, but it doesnt mean it necessarily needs to be served cold.

If you take the cup of cold brewed coffee and heat it up in the microwave or on the stovetop, youll have the smoothest cup of hot coffee youve ever tasted!

If the acidity of coffee bothers you, but youre in the mood for a hot cup of coffee, heat up some cold brew for a smooth cup of coffee that is virtually acid-free. This is actually my favorite way to drink hot coffee.

As far as iced coffee is concerned, of course, it can be served hot!

However, thats basically just reversing the whole reason it was iced in the first place. Since iced coffee is quite literally just brewed coffee added to ice, skip that extra step and order yourself some delicious hot coffee instead.

How To Make Cold Brew Concentrate At Home

Cold brew coffee concentrate is where the very best iced coffee begins! Simple, slow-brewed, extra strong and flavorfulthe perfect brew to keep on-hand in your fridge. Ill show you how to make cold brew concentrate in 3 easy steps, including the ideal cold brew concentrate ratio of coffee-to-water.

It starts with your favorite coffee beans, ground coarsely, and then mixed with water. Then, all that you have to do is steep overnight, strain, and dilute to serve! Simple as that, youve got homemade cold brew coffee concentrate that you can enjoy in your favorite homemade iced coffee drinks.

Whats most important in this process is the cold brew concentrate ratio, or the amount of coffee grounds relative to the amount of water. Coffee concentrate is meant to be stronger, more concentrated, than a classic cold brew. Thats why its best served diluted with water, and why the coffee to water ratio will be a bit different for concentrate.

Whether youre wanting to make DIY cold brew concentrate or just a classic cold brew, Ill share the ratios for both so you can decide. Whatever you choose, homemade cold brew will always be far cheaper than store-bought or heading to Starbucks, and so easy to make with your favorite beans.

Which Lasts Longer Cold Brew Or Iced Coffee

Cold brew keeps very well in the fridge and will taste great for up to 2 weeks. Plus, if you make it as a concentrate, its a great space-saver in the fridge.

Iced coffee will generally taste the best within the same day it was brewed, but you can save it for a day or two in the fridge.

After the first day, you may find that it starts tasting a bit sour. If youve ever made yourself a batch of cheap coffee grounds, youll know exactly what I mean.

Many coffee shops will use day-old coffee for their iced coffee, and you wont notice too much of a difference in that case. Any more than a day, however, and youll really be pushing your luck.

If you want to be able to have coffee throughout the week with minimal effort, a simple batch of cold brew is what youll need.

Whats The Best Coffee Maker To Use

This choice depends a lot on your personal preferences. Those who like their coffee stronger might advocate for making espresso to use as your iced coffee base, but regular coffee that you drip brew or make in a stovetop coffee maker are suitable options for most people.

Preparing your favorite type of coffee is a start but consider how strong youd like your cold drink to be. For instance, if you want your drink to be strong but dont want to make espresso, maybe try a darker roast.

    Cold Brew Coffee Recipe Tips

How to Make Cold Brew Iced Coffee Concentrate
    • Fresh is best. Whether youre making hot coffee or cold brew, freshly ground beans will always yield the best flavor. Why? Grinding coffee beans releases their oils. These oils are what add complexity and depth to a cup of coffee. After you grind coffee beans, these oils begin to dry out. As a result, you want to use coffee beans right after you grind them, when their oils have just been released and their flavor is fresh.
    • Grind the coffee beans coarsely. That way, theyll be easier to strain out of the coffee.
    • Adjust the ratios to taste. One of the reasons I love making cold brew at home is that its easy to adjust each cup of coffee to taste. If Ive made a particularly strong batch of cold brew, I dilute each glass with more milk or water. If its less strong, I just add a splash. Dont hesitate to add more coffee, water, or milk to create a flavor and intensity you love.
