This is a quick how-to summary. For more detail, see recipe card below:

  • Coarsely grind the coffee.

  • Submerge the grounds just so they are all below the surface of the water.
  • Lid the container and set at room temperature over night or for about 12 hours.

  • Discard the filter in your compost bin or garden and transfer the cold brew to a mason jar or glass carafe.
  • How to Make Cold Brew Coffee in a French Press

My preferred brewing system is to make cold brew coffee in a French press. This is my self proclaimed cold press coffee maker! It does have limitations because a French press only holds three cups of water, but I find it to be the tidiest and no waste way for me to make cold brew at home. I can get about five servings out of this recipe when cut with milk or water. And I didnt have to buy anything new to make it. In summary, heres how to use a French press to DIY cold brew :

  • Coarsely grind the coffee.
  • In the French press container add the coffee grounds and pour filtered water over the grounds.
  • Lid the French press and gently press the plunger slightly, just to submerge the grounds so they are all below the surface of the water yet still at the top of the press. No need to stir.
  • Set at room temperature over night or for about 12 hours.

Why I Love The Madesco Filters

I used to pour all of my cold brew through thick paper filters. It often took nearly an hour for the entire batch to filter and most of the oils responsible for rich aromatics and flavors were captured by the paper. I would often spend a few minutes scooping out the spent coffee grounds from the brewing vessel.

These cloth filters from Madesco Labs allow the oils to pass through, but are just as effective as paper filters at removing the coffee grounds. Now, instead of needing a brewing vessel, a cone and a filter, and a serving vessel, I now only need a brewing vessel and the Madesco filter.

The final brew is flavorful and balanced, but the pain of the process is cut dramatically.

If you want to brew your own cold brew coffee and want it to be super simple, I highly recommend checking out the Madesco Cold Brew Filters. Madesco labs makes a couple different sizes, and even has a solid brewing and program for commercial brewing.

The short answer: You can add fresh, whole spices while brewing . For syrups or flavored sugars, add at the end.

    More details

Heres where things get fun. You can play it straight and drink your coffee cold and without added flavors. Or, you can add your favorite flavors to the brew for a tailored and tasty experience. We love to add a cinnamon stick or two to the jar, then add the coffeesock and grounds. This imparts a subtle cinnamony flavor that really complements the chocolate notes of the coffee.

We also like flavored sugars, though we add those when the brew is finished. Make sure to add some warm water to the sugar to melt the crystals first, the mix or shake to combine with your brew.

Experiment with vanilla bean, anise, or your favorite whole spices. Or add spiced sugars or simple syrup at the end.

Should You Stir Cold Brew While Steeping

No, you should avoid stirring cold brew coffee while its steeping. The ground coffee beans will sink to the bottom and only give off their flavor to the water at the bottom of the container or mug you are using. If you dont stir the cold brew, the ground coffee beans will steep through the entire water-filled cup.

Cold brew is a method of brewing coffee using cold water. It is a popular way to enjoy coffee because it allows you to drink coffee immediately after making it. Cold brew is brewed by placing ground coffee beans into a jar or other vessel containing cold water. This process takes place overnight or longer. Once the coffee grounds have steeped in the cold water, the mixture is strained and placed into another container where it is stored until ready to consume. Drip coffee differs from cold brew in that it uses hot water instead of cold. Drip coffee is typically prepared by pouring freshly brewed coffee directly into a cup or mug. The hot water drips down through the coffee grounds and into the cup. You can filter cold brew coffee using a paper filter. Simply pour the cold brew coffee into the filter and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then strain the coffee and discard the liquid left behind in the filter.

On a warm, sunny day, you can also brew outdoors or in a sunny window. The warmer the temperature, the lower the brew time. Of course, this will also change up your flavor profile, since its not technically cold brew if you’re brewing in the warm sun.

Can You Make Cold Brew Coffee Hot

Yes cold brew can be heated. The easiest way to do this is to brew cold brew coffee concentrate and then add hot water to it. If you brew a 1:2 concentrate, you should be able to add 8 or 9 oz. of hot water to 1 oz. of concentrate to get close to that golden ratio of 1:19.

From a practical perspective, pour hot water into a measuring cup and add a little at a time, tasting it along the way. Stop when you feel bliss.

    Cold Brew Queen Experiment:

So, I had to wonder why no one had tried a true hybrid method? In this method I boiled water and let it sit for a couple minutes to let it cool slightly. Water boils at 212 Fahrenheit and ideal temperature for brewing coffee is 195-200 F. Then, I poured just enough coffee on the grounds to wet them. In essence I bloomed the grounds with some hot water. Then to cool everything quickly I topped off the container with cold waterice cube optional depending how cold your water is. Then, I let it immerse for the usual time and strained. Two tasters sampled the results. Taster 1 preferred the hot bloomed coffee slightly citing a better body and interestingly less bitterness. Taster 2 slightly preferred the room temperature brew stating the hot bloomed coffee had an off-taste on the finish. Taster 2 agreed the hot bloomed coffee had more body.

Your brewing bag is an unbleached, dye free, chemical free cotton bag. As such, there will be no chemical leeching into your coffee as with other products. The bag is easy to wash and it will last you for a long time. Here are a few tips on how to do that.

  • Sanitize your cold brew coffee pouch by placing it into boiling water for a few minutes, or just wash it.
  • Every time, after brewing with your brewing bag, hot or cold, turn it inside-out and rinse with warm water. Make sure no grounds are left in the inside.
  • Hang dry your pouch. If you need to tumble dry, set your machine on low heat to avoid shrinkage.
  • In time your filter will discolour from the coffee its perfectly safe to use it. If this colour bothers you, you could bleach it, but we dont recommend it.

How To Brew Coffee Manually And What Are The Differences Between Brewing Methods

Pour over and other manual brewing methods are my absolute favorites. There is something super interesting about brewing your coffee manually and making it taste better. Also one reason behind the better taste is that with manual brewing the process is much more precise and controllable. I actually gave my coffee brewer to a friend because I fell in love with manual brewing methods and noticed that I wasn’t using my coffee brewer anymore.

How to brew coffee with pour over? Watch our video here and learn!

For all of these methods you will need a scale, a grinder, a water boiler, a timer and also a kettle comes in handy. Kettles are in many shapes and sizes but the most important factor is that the kettle has a goose neck so that the water distribution is as controllable as possible.
