How To Make Great Iced Coffee At Home

1. Start with Quality Coffee Beans

The better the beans, the better the coffee, right? We love using our H.C. Valentine Royal 150 Blend — its apricot, chocolate, and caramel notes are perfect in an iced coffee!

2. Make Coffee Ice Cubes

Freeze leftover coffee into an ice cube tray, and pop ’em into your iced coffee the next morning. The best part? When they melt, they add flavor to your brew instead of diluting it. If you really want to get creative, you can drizzle some chocolate or sprinkle a little cinnamon into your ice cubes before freezing them.

3. Flavor Your Iced Coffee Like a Barista

No need to spend a ton of money — here’s how to make your own coffee creamers and flavored syrups.

4. Make a Big Batch

There are several ways to make iced coffee at home, but the most simple way is to brew a pot of coffee in your coffee maker, and stick it in a temperature-safe container in your refrigerator until it’s cold.

If you’re really short on time, you can “double brew”, or add double the amount of coffee grounds you normally use . It won’t taste diluted when you pour it over ice because the coffee is super concentrated.

5. Experiment with Cold Brew

There are differences between iced coffee and cold brew , but cold brew can still be poured over ice and mixed with milk. Here’s how to make cold brew coffee at home in your French press.

Variation: Vietnamese Iced Coffee

And now for something entirely different. Samebut different.

This is a variation on classic Vietnamese Iced Coffee, which actually does begin with a hot brewbut Im using the cold stuff.

Fill the glass with ice and coffee concentrate as we did before, then crack open a can of sweetened condensed milk.

A glorious substance. One you should get to know better if you dont already.

Drizzle in at least 2 tablespoons for a big glass

Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk

Ive already mentioned using sweetened almond milk, but it contains sugar.

If you opt for the vanilla version of the unsweetened milk the vanilla flavor will bring a hint of sweetness to your drink.

Again, you dont have to stick to almond milk. You can use any vanilla-flavored dairy alternative, you can also deviate from vanilla to chocolate or nuts if you have that option.

This will give you the best cold brew flavor without the bitterness that could come from steeping too long.

You can either steep your cold brew on your counter at room temperature or in your refrigerator.

Thats easy enough with a pour-over coffee makersimply bring water to a boil, let it stand briefly, then pour it over the grounds. Otherwise, use a stellar drip coffee maker to reach that temperature automatically.

Iced Coffee Method: Overnight Cold Brew In A French Press

  • Time: 18 hours
  • Overall rating: 7.5/10

About this method:The French press method starts by using 1 ounce of coffee for 12 ounces of cold water. Grind the coffee beans into a coarse grind then stir in the water in the base of the press. Place the lid on top, but do not plunge. Steep the coffee overnight, then plunge the top in the morning.

Results: I really enjoyed this method! The coffee was laced with smooth, chocolatey notes. This was also my favorite method that had oat milk in it the oat milk gave the coffee some nuttiness that I really liked.

My takeaway: This is a great method. It extracted some lovely flavors and aroma. The only hurdle is fridge storage space , so you may have to create space in your fridge to accommodate. Also, you will need to have a French press at home.

Iced Coffee Vs Cold Brew

First, lets be clear: Iced coffee is not the same as cold brew. They are both popular kinds of cold coffee, but there are important differences.

Making cold brew is a time-intensive process. Cold brew is more about the method of preparing the coffee than the serving temperature of the coffee itself. For cold brew, you grind beans and steep them at room temperature for an extended period, typically between 12 and 16 hours. This produces a cool pot of coffee with an even, smooth taste.

Iced coffee is what were talking about. You take a hot cuppa and you turn it cold. You can brew the coffee as you normally would, using your favorite brewing method, and then you introduce it to ice via methods described below, to slightly dilute the flavor without eliminating it.

Prepare Your Coffee To Be Brewed

Whether you want to use strong coffee or espresso is up to you. We prefer espresso, as the notes shine through when combined with milk. We recommend not using flavored coffee. If you want to make a flavored drink, you can add syrup at the end.

If you need to heat water because you are brewing your coffee manually, heat it to just below boiling or let it sit for a minute after boiling. The water should be between 195 and 205 degrees. Boiling water will burn the coffee, taking away the delicacy of the drink.

Iced Coffee Method: Aeropress Coffee Made With Room

How To Make Iced Coffee at Home
  • Time: 2 minutes
  • Overall rating: 3/10

About this method: The people who love the Aeropress really love it . Aeropress is a cylindrical device that on one end has a filter and basket for coffee. Water goes into the vessel and then another piece plunges the water through the filter directly into the cup. For hot coffee, you use hot water for iced coffee, you start with room-temperature water. Once you pour water into the vessel, stir the coffee grounds and water for 1 minute, then plunge the contents into the cup. Add enough room-temp or ice-cold water to make 1 cup of coffee.

Results: While I appreciate how fast you can have your hand on a cup of iced coffee, this is a very lightly brewed coffee. The color was so light similar to iced tea. It was actually the lightest of all the brews. What did take me by surprise was that despite how light the brew was, the coffee itself had some really nice flavors come through.

My takeaway: This is a great method for the people who prefer a lighter, less intense cup of coffee. I felt that the overall flavor was really nice, but would have liked to let the coffee grounds steep a little longer to get more or, alternatively, to start this as a warm cup that I cooled down. This also is not a cold brew for a person who wants to add their favorite milk or alt milk. I found that the coffee flavor was muted enough as is.

Remember That Ice Is An Ingredient

In fact, its one of the only ingredients. And if youre an absolute purist , its one of only two ingredients in iced coffeethat is, coffee and water. The solid-state H2O that goes into your brew can actually have a make-or-break effect on your finished drink, though. So definitely use good, drinkable water and ice cube trays that are clean and dont smell. Also, be sure you have a fresh freezer. If youve got last months lentil soup in there, your iced coffee will taste like last months lentil soup.

I love a totally pristine, clear cube in mine, because its something so simple to elevate the glass. Every coffee should feel like a special occasion, you know what I mean? Get the Perfect Ice recipe.

Chocolate Ice Cubes / Sweetened Coffee Ice Cubes

Theres nothing worse than leaving you drink for two minutes only to come back and find the ice cubes melted and the drink watery.

A clever way to get around this, and sweeten your coffee at the same time, is to use flavored ice cubes.

Chocolate ice cubes or ice cubes made of sweetened coffee work wonderfully. Another option is mint-flavored ice cubes.

To make chocolate-flavored ice cubes you can use chocolate milk, or mix milk with cocoa powder and sugar. With the coffee ice cubes, you can sweeten the coffee however you want, then freeze it and add the cubes into your coffee the next time you drink it.

Its like coffee inception!

Because you have to wait for the ice cubes to melt before you get the full sweetened effect this option is best for those looking for just a hint of sweetness.
