How Long Do I Brew The Grounds

How to: Three Ways to Cold Brew Coffee

The short answer: 10-12 hours for a 32 ounce container. Scale up to 24 hours for a larger batch.

More details

The longer your brew steeps, the more it will extract. Thats great up until it isnt. Just like when you use a too-fine grind, over extracted coffee tastes bitter.

On a warm, sunny day, you can also brew outdoors or in a sunny window. The warmer the temperature, the lower the brew time. Of course, this will also change up your flavor profile, since its not technically cold brew if you’re brewing in the warm sun.

Heres our general recommendations, though you can test your batches for shorter or longer to find your sweet spot.

Key Tips For Making Cold Brew

In essence, making cold brew coffee is a very simple process. All you need to do is:

  • Coarsely grind some coffee,
  • Add cold water,
  • Let it steep for a long period of time usually from 12-24 hours,
  • Then separate the coffee grounds from the liquid, and there you have it cold brew coffee.
  • Although these steps are not complicated in and of themselves, its important that you ask yourself a few key questions before you start brewing. These are as follows:

  • Whats the right coffee for making cold brew coffee?
  • Whats the best-tasting cold brew recipe for you?
  • What coffee brewer or technique can you use most easily at home?
  • Below, well be going through each of these points of consideration, in order to help you select the best cold brew option for you personally.

Can I Make Cold Brew At Home

Yes! Its simpler than you think! Here is VinePairs recipe for never-fail homemade cold brew. Just remember to start steeping your grounds the night before you want to drink it. Whats The Best Cold Brew Brewing Time

We recommend letting your cold brew steep for 12 to 18 hours. This is a big range, but keep in mind that its a slow process, so the flavor wont be drastically different at either end of the range. The biggest thing to avoid is brewing for longer than 24 hours, after which your cold brew may be undrinkable and very over-extracted. Try brewing for 12 or 14 hours to start and see what you think! If the flavor isnt strong enough, let your next batch brew for longer.

Pour Through Cloth Vs French Press Vs Cold Brew Machine

There are three methods to making cold brew, so choose whichever works best for you! The pour through cloth is my personal favorite.

Pour Through ClothFor the straining process, I prefer to use a pour through cloth because its simple and doesnt require any special gear. Simply place the cloth over a cup or bowl, and slowly pour the coffee concentrate through. Let it sit and strain through, refraining from making the cloth overflow. Additionally, dont squeeze the coffee grounds through let them slowly strain.

French PressIf you do have a French press, they are great to use for making cold brew coffee. Measure out your coffee grounds and water, then add them to the press. Stick the lid on top and let the coffee steep for about 12 to 24 hours in the fridge. Press the plunger down, decant the coffee, and serve!

Heres a great tutorial and description of the parts of a French press that may be helpful.

Cold Brew MachineFinally, for the die hard coffee lovers that may be extra prepared for this recipe, using an actual cold brew machine wont hurt!

Is It Different From Iced Coffee

Yes! Iced coffee is brewed hot and served cold. You chill hot coffee either by pouring it over ice, or refrigerating it for a few hours before serving. There are drawbacks to both methods, unfortunately. The former dilutes your brew quite a bit, and hours-old coffee is never going to taste super fresh.

Cold-brew coffee, however, is made by steeping coarsely ground coffee beans in room-temperature water for six to 12 hours. This creates a coffee concentrate you mix with cold water or milk.

Cold-brew devotees say it tastes smoother than typical iced coffee, and those who are sensitive to acid believe it is easier-drinking than hot coffee.

Why Is Cold Brew Less Acidic

Fact: Cold brew coffee is much gentler on your stomach than regular hot coffee.

Studies have proven that cold brew coffee is up to 65% less acidic than a regular cup of joe.

Many people actually avoid a daily cup of coffee because of the acidity and digestion problems. Perhaps they have stomach issues, like an ulcer. While there are less acidic coffee products on the market, they dont really taste as good as a real organic, fair-traded cup of joe. If you are wondering whether drinking coffee is healthy, check out our post.

Cold brewing coffee actually works to reduce the acidity without taking away from the flavor. In fact, brewing coffee in cold water enhances the flavor. Since hot water isnt used to brew cold coffee, the natural oils in the beans that create more acidity cant permeate into the mixture.

Remember To Dilute The Cold Brew Concentrate

One thing to keep in mind is that youre actually making cold brew concentrate. And this is pretty potent stuff. Only drink this straight up if you want to feel jittery and buzzy for the rest of the day .

Instead, what I recommend is serving this up over ice or diluting 50/50 with water. I also recommend adding your favorite milk, like almond milk, cashew milk or oat milk, for a deliciously creamy, and definitely thirst-quenching beverage.

Does The Type Of Roast Matter

Choosing the type of roast you use is largely a matter of personal preference for coffee consumption. The best course of action is to experiment. Dont make the mistake of presuming that your chosen roast for hot coffee is the same as your desired roast for cold coffee.

Despite the expert disagreement, some advocate light to medium roasts, which are naturally more acidic than dark roasts, because the cold brewing process removes a large amount of acidity from the beans during the roasting step.

Another reason that other cold brewers choose dark roasts is that cold-brewed coffee tends to taste darker and richer and includes notes of chocolate, nutmeg, and earthiness than hot-brewed coffee.

Because of the bright acidity that distinguishes light roasts, it may be difficult to extract this acidity during cold brewing, resulting in a muted overall flavor.

Its vital to remember that lighter roasts will take longer to extract because the beans cellular structure has been less damaged throughout the roasting process.

The Beginners Guide To Cold Brew Coffee

Cold Brew coffee, by definition, is simply the process of steeping coffee grounds in room temperature or cold water for an extended period of time. The result of this process is much different than what you would get by simply icing a hot brewed coffee. The lack of heat prevents many of the solubles in the coffee from completely dissolving resulting in a coffee with a much lower acidity, enhanced smoothness, greater sweetness, and generally little to no bitter component. The longer brewing time and higher coffee to water ratio are necessary to give the water more time to extract those solubles from the coffee grounds.

At Water Street, we have a unique Cold Brew called Iced Coffee with a BANG! Its brewed with a custom blend of lighter to medium roasts and we love it for its sweetness and chocolate notes ! Which Is The Best Coffee For Making Cold Brew

To some extent, the right coffee beans to choose for cold brew will depend on how you plan use it.

A typical espresso blend can work ok if youre planning to add milk to the finished product. However, something roasted lighter, like a filter roast or a light espresso roast, is usually better for serving straight up.

In terms of origins for me, the heavy body & fruity flavours of natural or honey-processed coffees tend to work better with cold coffee brewing. For example, the deep fruity sweetness of an Ethiopian natural or the heavy chocolate flavours of a Brazil Pulped-Natural are right on the money in a cold brew.

On the other hand, the more delicate, refined acidity of washed Central American coffees just dont seem to show their potential in cold brewing. You might be best to save these coffees for hot water brewing.

What Kind Of Coffee Beans Should I Use For Cold Brew

The short answer: This ones easyuse your favorite medium or dark roast.

    More details

You can use your favorite coffee bean for cold brew. Its the size of the grind that matters more.

Cold brewing brings out different flavor profiles from your bean. So you may find that you want a different roast for cold brew than you do for hot brewed coffee. Since lighter roasts tend to play up the acid qualities, cold brewing will mute that profile. You might love it, but most prefer darker roasts.

With a medium of dark roast, the cold brewing process will bring out the nutty and chocolatey flavors, resulting in a rich and smooth flavor.

Feel free to experiment, but we recommend a medium or dark roast coffee

Cold Brew Vs Cold Drip Whats The Difference

    Lets clear up some confusion.

Often, when people talk about cold drip, theyre referring to the fancy glass towers by brands like Yama & Hario that look a bit like a drug lab. In these devices, cold water drips through the grounds over a number of hours into a glass vessel at the bottom.

While they look cool Im not a big fan.

Why? To be honest, I just dont think I tastes very good. The finished product is often under-extracted, watery and just generallyflavourless.

Cold Brew on the other hand, typically refers to devices where the coffee grounds are fully immersed in cold water. Yes, Ill admit these devices are unlikely to end up on a foodies Instagram feed but they can deliver cold-brew that is simple to make, cheap & genuinely tasty when its done well.

How To Make Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate

    I

Cold brew concentrate is the basis for making cold brew coffee or iced coffee. By adding liquid to the concentrate in the form of milk or water, you can adjust the caffeine content and strength of the coffee.

Here’s how to make cold brew coffee concentrate:

Servings: 4 cups cold brew concentrate

    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup whole beans coffee
    • 4-5 cups water

    Preparation:

Grind the coffee beans coarsely and transfer them into an airtight container for steeping. Pour the water over the grounds and let it steep for at least 12 hours, ideally for 20 hours. When youre ready to use the concentrate, strain it and keep it in the fridge.

Sträva Tip: Cold brew concentrate is very strong in taste and caffeine content, though this depends on the type and amount of coffee beans and how much water youre using. Cold brew coffee is sweeter in taste than regularly brewed coffee as this brewing method leaves the bitterness of the coffee beans behind.
