This machine differs from some other Nespresso machines out there in that this one will also steam milk automatically and means you can make lattes, cappuccino, or espresso macchiato. It uses the Nespresso Original pods in the machine.

I got to spend a couple of weeks with the Nespresso by DeLonghi Lattissima One Ill tell you about my experience with it, what it can do, how it works and the pros and cons after having it in my home for a week.

The Delonghi Nespresso Lattissima One in slate delivers delicious espressos, lungos, cappuccinos, and lattes. The Lattissima Ones milk system is single-serve and waste free. There are drink specific lines etched into the bottle, however, an incorporated sensor knows when the milk has run out and automatically stops steaming. Additionally, the bottle itself is dishwasher safe for easy clean up. Drinks on the Lattissima One are customizable, with touch and hold coffee volume programming and cleaning and descaling indicators alert you to any maintenance needs. You can even pre-select the drink youd like while the machine is heating up, and, once its ready, it will automatically make it. The Lattissima One fits on any countertop with its compact design, and into any kitchen with its elegant, alternately glossy and matte pinstripe design.

Other features worth making note of theres automatic shut off to save energy, and the water tank holds more than enough water for 17 doubles before it needs to be refilled , you can use the cup riser or remove it to brew a bigger cup, and the pod bin holds about 10 discarded pods. All the pieces are washable.

The Lattissima One can make espresso, lungo coffee and milky drinks tailored to your taste. The machine takes Nespresso pods that can make espresso or longer milky drinks in under a minute. The plus side of using pods is that you can enjoy the benefits of Nespressos large portfolio of coffees, including the popular Livanto, Volluto, Roma and Arpeggio options, with minimal mess to clear up after. On the downside, this machine wont allow you to experiment with freshly ground beans and artisan filter flavors.

The three main control buttons on the top of the machine light up when they’re ready to use. These arent labelled with text, so youll have to refer to the manual to work out what the icons mean since they perform functions in addition to their standard 40ml espresso, 110ml lungo coffee and milky drink options.

Without a touchscreen that simplifies the process of setting up the Lattissima One, making coffee and turning the machine on and off, we had to resort to the manual to figure out how the machine works.

To test the Lattissima One, we made an espresso and a cappuccino and timed how long it took to make, measured the noise level in use, as well as whether the coffees reached optimum temperature. We were keen to see how well the espresso crema held together and, ultimately, if it tasted any good.

Lets take a quick tour of the machine theres a big 1L or 34 oz, low profile water tank in the back. Around front theres a moveable riser and drip tray, pod receptacle in behind. The milk cup is removable. Out of the box, this machine will brew a 1.3 ounce single shot or a nearly 4 ounce luongo.

Nespresso By Delonghi Lattissima One: Milk Drinks

Lets move on to the milk drinks

As I noted up front, this machine will make only three milk based drinks: lattes, cappuccino, or espresso macchiato. It also wont work with alt milks and is only designed to work with cows milk.

The milk container is labelled and will show you how much milk to add for each drink you have to add the right amount manually and it will use all the milk in the jug so its up to you to measure correctly.

Descaling The Nespresso Lattissima One

Descaling the appliance takes a few more steps than most coffee/espresso makers. Theres a descaling alert on the control panel, and the descaling alert will turn orange when the machine needs to be descaled. Fill the water tank with water and add Nespresso Descaling Solution . Then, the descaling pipe , is plugged into the steam connector on the front. . This will start the descaling process, which takes around 20 minutes. The descaling button will blink orange during the process and then turn white when the descaling process is over.

After placing a container on the drain tray, just press the espresso button to let the descaling product flow through the coffee outlet and descaling pipe. When the cycle finishes, fill the tank with water and press the espresso button again to rinse all of the descaling solution out.

Making A Latte Macchiato

Ironically, while chatting over coffee, my high school friend told me about the time she tried to order a latte in Italy. A latte is a latte anywhere in the world right? Nope. I almost spat out my drink when I heard she didn’t add any other words to her order. So, naturally, she was served a cup of milk . What she wanted was a cafe latte or a latte macchiato. Here, I show you how to make the latter type of latte.

To make a latte macchiato, I filled the milk jug to the indicated line, inserted a capsule and closed the lid, and pressed the milk button. The Nespresso began to froth the milk into the cup, before brewing the coffee.

What To Know About Nespresso Pods: Environmental Impact And Cost

Ive talked in other reviews about the environmental impact of coffee pods so Ill just recap quickly here. Nespresso has a pod recycling program and even pays the shipping. Pods cost about 70 cents to a dollar per pod which I find reasonable given coffee shop prices.

When it comes to the coffees and their taste, theres lots to enjoy. I find the coffees, packaged in their little cups to be fresh, and with the huge number of different roasts, tastes, flavours and options, youre certain to find some you love. Bottom line here, the coffee is good.

To make a black Americano, I just filled the water tank with water, inserted a capsule, and closed the lid. On the first go, I used the Espresso ispirazione ristretto Italiano which was a little strong, even for me. The Barista creations Chiaro on the contrary had a caramelly, almost dried-fruit taste which I much preferred.

I love how there is no fumbling around and no learning curve. Also, the machine doesnt take long to heat up. Its ready to brew an espresso in 25 seconds and is ready for milk beverages in just 40 seconds.

The Nespresso Lattissima One is securely packed to keep the machine safe during the shipping process. In addition to the espresso maker, the packing contents also include the user manual, a box of 14 capsules, a Welcome to Nespresso folder, and a water hardness test stick.

Theres a detachable water tank on the back of the machine. The descaler pipe is hidden in the descaling pipe storage area in the same location. The used capsule container and drip tray fit on the front left side. Theres also cup support with a grill for small containers.

The Rapid Cappuccino System, which attaches on the front right side, consists of a milk container, with a lid and milk spout.

Cleaning the Nespresso Lattissima One is easy. Recall that after I insert a capsule to make coffee, I close the lid. Now, I can merely lift and close the lid again to eject the capsule into the used capsule container. After emptying the container, both it and the drip tray as well as the water tank can be removed and rinsed. I can also place a container under the coffee outlet and press the lungo button to rinse it out. The surface of the machine can be cleaned with a damp cloth.

The Rapid Cappuccino System can be disassembled and cleaned in the dishwasher although I prefer to wash by hand.

Those who like simplicity will enjoy the ease of simply inserting a capsule and pressing a button, for delicious coffee.

Some of us like espresso machines that look like they belong in a coffee house. But this is not one of those massive, industrial appliances. The Nespresso Lattissima One is not only compact and stylish in design, but it also comes in several different colors, including Black , Shadow Black , Porcelain White, and Silky White . If youre not a fan of stainless steel or black, this espresso machine is available in lighter tones too.

There are two stand-out features. The first is the black window sensor that detects the remaining quantity of milk in the jug. This sensor allows the machine to automatically stop the milk frothing process when the milk jug is empty essentially acting as a boil-dry protection mechanism.

We also like economical and minimalist one-button design. In short, the length / ‘milkiness’ of your beverage is determined by how much dairy/plant-based alternative is in the milk jug, so you’re in full control, right from the start.

Easy To Use But Foam & Heat Lacking In Quality

The operation of the machine when adding milk to drinks is basically foolproof. When you add milk, it will heat the milk first, add it to your cup, then pour the espresso.

When it comes to the heat level and the foam, I was not impressed at all. The milk is basically warm, certainly not hot, and theres not really any foam to speak of. While this machine will warm and dispense milk thats basically it. In my opinion the milk features of this machine arent worth it. Youd be better off with a straight up Nespresso espresso maker and a different milk solution.

I took the temperature of the milk right out of the spout and it topped out at about 125 F. Most baristas would tell you the ideal milk temperature is between 155 and 165F.

There is an Automatic milk cleanup feature but this too is lacking the machine will rinse the milk jug for you with hot water if you press the milk button after its done with the drink and youve ejected the used capsule. But the water gets everywhere spilling out over the drip tray.

Youll also need to finish cleanup of the jug either by hand or by putting the pieces in the dishwasher.

From what I can tell about this machine and other Nespresso machines, you can t adjust the brew temperature . Nespresso says its supposed to be at a hot but drinkable temperature so you can have the espresso right away, and recommends if its not hot enough, to pre-heat your cup.
