Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oat Shaken Espresso Review

You can jump to the recipe card for full ingredients & instructions!

  • Make the brown sugar syrup.
  • Let the syrup steep.
  • Fill a mason jar or shaker with ice. Add the syrup and espresso and shake well.
  • Pour the shaken espresso into a glass of ice.
  • Top with oat milk and enjoy!
  • Can I use coffee instead of espresso?

Yes. Instead of espresso, use the same amount of strongly brewed coffee.

Can I double this iced espresso recipe?

Absolutely. Simply double the shaken espresso ingredients, pour over 2 glasses of ice, stir in oat milk, and serve.

How can I make this drink ahead of time?

Once the brown sugar syrup is made, this drink comes together quickly. Make the syrup in advance, pour it into an airtight container, and refrigerate for up to a week.

Can I use any type of milk for this brown sugar shaken espresso?

Oat milk is the classic pairing with this drink, but feel free to use any kind of dairy or non-dairy milk you enjoy. I used unflavored, unsweetened oat milk.

Satisfy your sweet tooth and get a boost of energy with this brown sugar shaken espresso!

When I Finally Got My Hands On One It Looked More Like A Traditional Starbucks Drink With No Discernible Cinnamon Topping Or Foam

This second drink wasn’t quite as good as I remembered. I couldn’t taste any cinnamon, and the brown sugar syrup had less flavor than my first one potentially because it had fewer pumps, or perhaps because it had been shaken a different way.

Overall, it was still tasty, but not in a “change my Starbucks order forever” way.

How To Make An Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso:

I put together a little video to guide you through it, but the steps are also spelled out below.

    • Brew two espresso shots
    • Add espresso, 2tbsp. brown sugar, 1/2tsp. vanilla syrup, 1/4tsp. cinnamon, and 1/2 cup ice to a shaker.
    • Shake, shake, shake
    • Add 1/2 cup or more of ice to a glass
    • Pour coffee mixture to the ice
    • Add 1/4-1/2 oatmilk to your glass
    • Drink and enjoy!

Its super easy once you get it all figured out. Now that I know how to make it and have a shaker I can actually use, it only takes a couple minutes to put it all together. After all, Starbucks couldnt offer a drink that would take forever to make. Can you imagine how long their lines would be if they did?

Starbucks Shaken Espresso Recipe: Cinnamon Chocolate Coffee

Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar OatMilk Shaken EspressoRecipe What a mouthful ! This new drink made its debut on the Starbucks menu a while back . Starbucks describes it as Starbucks Blonde roast espresso, brown sugar and cinnamon with an oat beverage and ice for a cool lift to power you through your day. Sounds tempting! Its actually 4 pumps of brown sugar syrup, a dash of cinnamon powder, 3 espresso shots , ice and oat milk. But I may have added a new ingredient to this one. Scroll down to keep reading!

Chocolate! I cant make any recipe without having at least one thought cross my mind on how chocolate would taste in it. *Maybe* I even googled what chocolate curry would taste like ! But in this drink, I wanted the chocolate-cinnamon-coffee flavor, rather than just the cinnamon-y flavor of its-the-end-of-October-and-Thanksgiving-is-approaching. Cant go wrong with a touch of cocoa!

Im no Starbucks barista, but what I enjoy about making these copycat Starbucks drinks in my own home is that I can easily add in or remove another shot of espresso, add or remove extra cinnamon and so on. Heck, I can even use cold brew instead of espresso shots. You can customize it to exactly how you want it, and thats the best part!

How To Make An Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

This unique coffee drink really couldn’t be easier to make! You’ll find a detailed, printable recipe at the end of this post, but here’s an overview of the steps:

  • Prepare simple syrup. To make the brown sugar syrup, simply combine equal amounts of brown sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stirring constantly, cook the syrup until it’s hot and all the sugar crystals have dissolved. You don’t need to simmer or boil it. Let cool completely before using. Tip: For extra cinnamon flavor, add a cinnamon stick to the syrup as you cook it. Let the syrup cool, then remove the stick before using.
  • Combine espresso and syrup. Brew the espresso using your preferred method , then mix it with 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons of syrup in a cocktail shaker. I prefer to use 1 ½ tablespoons, but if you like sweeter drinks, then use 2 tablespoons. Tip: Stirring these two ingredients together before adding the ice, will cool down the espresso, which makes the finished drink less watery.
  • Fill shaker with ice and shake. After you’ve stirred the espresso and syrup together, fill the shaker half-full with ice. Then, shake the ingredients together for about 10 to 15 seconds. If you have single-walled shaker, like mine, the outside will be cold and covered with condensation . Tip: Don’t skimp on the ice … the less you use, the more watered down your drink will be.
  • That’s really all there is to it! Simple, right?

You need between 2 to 3 shots of freshly brewed Starbucks blonde espresso or your favourite brand of espresso for this recipe. A shot of espresso is between 30 to 44ml.Make the brown syrup: to a small mixing bowl, add brown sugar, hot boiling water and stir until the sugar dissolves. To a large cup or shaker, add brown sugar syrup, brewed espresso, cinnamon, ice, cover tightly then shake for a few seconds until frothy.Transfer the shaken espresso with the ice to a serving glass, add more ice then top with cold oat milk. Stir if desired, drink and enjoy!

How To Make Brown Sugar Syrup

Simple syrup is easily made at home by mixing a 1:1 ratio of hot water to sugar so that the sugar dissolves into beverages. The syrup is frequently used in cocktails and iced coffees instead of plain granulated sugar, which results in a grainy texture. The liquid form of sugar blends better to sweeten drinks!

To make the brown sugar syrup, it’s the same case of equal amounts of brown sugar and water, which is then infused with cinnamon. It’s simmered until the syrup thickens and almost tastes like caramel.

You can use a cinnamon stick instead of ground cinnamon, but the longer you leave it the stronger the flavor will be.

Why Youll Love This Starbucks Shaken Espresso Recipe

Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso

Budget-Friendly: The grande size of this drink costs around $6 USD, which is quite a lot seeing as its, um, pretty delicious. Meaning, it would break my wallet if I drank one everyday. But with the version at home, you can buy a few simple ingredients at your local grocery store in bulk and make this for days without it costing as much over the long run as it would to get it directly at Starbucks.

ReducedSugar: You can control how much sugar you put in the drink recipe. The Starbucks version is very sweet and uses a simple syrup that they add multiple pumps of into the drink. I didnt choose to make a simple syrup here, so you can thank me when you shave the extra ten minutes off the time it takes to this!

For the sugar though, you can opt to use a healthier sweeter to make brown sugar rather than use brown sugar itself. Coconut sugar is also another option, thats similar to brown sugar for the purposes of this drink.

Chocolate or Not?: I made this drink by adding cocoa powder into the basic iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso. Originally, it doesnt contain cocoa, but I loved the addition of the chocolate flavour. Feel free to omit it, but it gives you more options to customize the drink.

You can use any rich, full-fat milk to make this Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso drink, although the flavor will change accordingly. If you’re using plant-based milk, make sure to use an unsweetened / plain variety. I’d recommend coconut milk or soy milk for the thickest, creamiest results, although other varieties may also be used.

    • Add a dash of this or tha- try a dash of vanilla or vanilla extract, cinnamon or nutmeg for another interesting boost of flavor. For a real treat add a dash of homemade Pumpkin Spice or Pumpkin Syrup.
