Bittersweet Alternatives To Sugar
Experts have warned against too much fructose , but artificial sweeteners pose their own health risks. Although more research is needed, many experts and sufferers with gout believe that man-made sugar substitutes like sucralose may be just as troublesome for uric acid levels in the body.
The problem may be that artificial sweeteners are acidic and generally acidic foods like coffee, vinegar and fizzy drinks are more dangerous for sufferers with gout. Moreover, these chemical sweeteners are known to clash with normal metabolic processes, and since the build-up of uric acid is a metabolic issue, its important to steer clear of anything that interferes with your bodys ability to break down and filter compounds and toxins.
Organ Meats Are Extremely High In Purines And Should Also Be Avoided
Organ meats, known as Offal, contain by far the most purines of any food in the human diet.
The most common forms of offal in the Western diet include liver , brain, heart, kidneys, and a mixture called Pâté.

Previous studies have not differentiated between intake of conventional meat and offal, so recommendations have to be the same. Given the strong link between meat intake and gout which is based on purine content alone offal should definitely be avoided too.
Somewhat contradictory to the purine-gout theory, consumption of purine-rich vegetables is not associated with an increased risk of gout .
Researchers speculate this could be due to a lower bioavailability of purines in vegetabes, as well as other nutrients which may offset the harmful effects of their purines.
Summary: Organ meats are some of the highest purine foods and should be completely avoided if you suffer gout attacks.

Coffee Lowers Gout Risk
The new study is based on data from nearly 46,000 male medical professionals enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. Over 12 years, 757 of these men developed gout, report Hyon K. Choi, MD, DrPH, of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and colleagues.
Because the men filled out detailed diet questionnaires, Choi’s team was able to track the men’s self-reported use of coffee and tea.
They found that the more coffee the men drank, the less likely they were to have gout.
Drinking one to three cups of coffee a day lowered gout risk by only 8%. But drinking four or five cups a day dropped gout risk by 40%. And true coffee addicts — those who drank six cups a day or more — had nearly a 60% lower risk of gout.
Caffeine, whether from coffee, tea, or both, was not related to gout risk. Tea, it turned out, did not decrease gout risk.
But decaffeinated coffee did have an effect, although it wasn’t as large as the effect of the high-test brew. Men who drank one to three cups of decaf had a 33% lower risk of gout. Those who drank four cups of decaf a day — or more — had only a 27% lower gout risk.

Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages in the world. More than 50% of Americans drink coffee at an average of 2 cups per day. Caffeine in coffee is known to offer many health benefits. Gout is an inflammatory condition of joints. Normally, purines break down to form uric acid, which is carried through the bloodstream to the kidneys, where it is processed and excreted through urine.

- Usually occurs at night without warning
- Joints affected will feel warm along with redness, tenderness, and swelling

What Is Gout And What Causes It
Before we can look at foods to avoid with gout, it is necessary to briefly understand what it is.
Gout is a form of joint inflammation, caused by excessive uric acid in circulation .
When the bodys natural uric acid threshold is exceeded, painful crystals can form in and around the joints. These crystals trigger the characteristic symptoms and pain.
Not everybody with high uric acid levels will get gout, but those who do always have high uric acid levels. This indicates there are other factors at play, but from a dietary perspective uric acid is the focus.
Excessive uric acid in the blood stream is typically driven by two factors: genetic predisposition and the ingestion of high-purine foods. Obviously, the dietary factor we can control.
When purines we eat are broken down and metabolised by the body, uric acid is formed as a by-product of this process. Its normal and healthy for uric acid to be formed, but excessive amounts are problematic.
Therefore, consuming less purine-rich foods should lower uric acid levels in your blood, lowering gout risk.
At least, in theory.

Orange Juice And Gout Risk
Many sugar-sweetened juices can increase your risk for gout, but naturally-sweetened juices like orange juice may also be a gout risk trigger. “In the last 10 years, there has been some evidence from some studies that high fructose in fruit juices may be associated with a higher risk of gout,” says Dr. Freeman. Fructose is a sugar that is added to soft drinks, but it occurs naturally in orange juice, so drinking too much OJ could be as risky as drinking a sugary soft drink.
Can Eliminating Alcohol Reverse Gout
In a word, no. Eliminating or cutting back on alcohol alone likely wont lower uric acid levels enough to effectively treat gout. For many people with gout, the target uric acid level is less than 6 mg/dL. If a person with high levels of uric acid goes on a diet, loses weight, eliminates high-purine foods like shellfish and stops drinking beer, they can lower their uric acid from, say, 10 to 9, but usually not much lower. Gout is a genetic disease and extremely few people can make enough of a change in their blood uric acid level with diet to control their gout, says Dr. Fields. That said, its still important for people to limit those foods and beverages mentioned as part of their treatment, especially in the first six months after they start uric acid-lowering therapy when the patient is vulnerable to flares since these foods and drinks can make gout worse. Watching your diet, especially early in treatment, can make a difference, says Dr. Fields.

Men who drink four or more cups of coffee each day appear less likely to develop gout, the most prevalent type of inflammatory arthritis in men, according to new research. The study involving over 45,000 men suggests that drinking large amounts of coffee can cut the risk of this illness by about half.
In 1986, researchers began collecting information from 45,869 men aged between 40 and 75 years. Participants in the study answered a host of questions, including how much coffee they drank each day.
This information was updated every four years until 1998, and over the course of this time 757 of the subjects in the study were newly diagnosed with gout, a painful form of arthritis in which a compound called uric acid accumulates and causes inflammation in joints.

How Does Coffee Help Gout
One reason coffee can help gout sufferers is because it lowers uric acid levels by increasing the rate of uric acid excretion in the body. Coffee contains beneficial compounds such as caffeine and polyphenols:
Caffeine functions similarly to xanthine oxidase inhibitors, which inhibit the activity of xanthine oxidase. Xanthine oxidase is an enzyme responsible for metabolizing purines, a source of uric acid. So inhibiting this enzyme can help prevent the buildup of uric acid.
Caffeine has a similar structure to allopurinol, a drug used to treat gout that removes uric acid from body tissues. When some people first start taking allopurinol, they may have an increased risk of gout attacks as the uric acid gets mobilized from the body tissues. Over time, however, taking the drug gradually decreases the amount of uric acid to a point where attacks no longer occur. Thats why occasional coffee drinkers may have more gout attacks when taking allopurinol, while regular coffee drinkers may not.
Coffee contains a polyphenol called chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid and other antioxidants help reduce the level of insulin in the blood. Insulin and uric acid are closely related because increased insulin sensitivity and decreased insulin levels improve the elimination of uric acid and sodium. Thus, chlorogenic indirectly removes uric acid from the body by improving insulin sensitivity.

1. Cherries This antioxidant rich food may help by reducing uric acid levels and reducing inflammation. Several studies have shown that individuals eating cherries or drinking cherry juice had fewer gout attacks than if they didnt consume them. The compounds found in cherries responsible for reducing gout are anthocyanins and bioflavonoids, both which fight inflammation and help reduce uric acid levels. Eating 10 to 12 cherries a day can result in a 35% lower risk of another gout attack along with drinking tart cherry juice daily may also lower uric acid levels.
2. Vegetables Filling your plate up with more vegetables can be smart way to lessen the likelihood of a gout attack. A 2014 study showed individuals with hyperuricemia consumed fewer vegetables. Vegetables have a much lower amount of purines than meat and are an important source of fiber, vitamin C, folate and potassium, all key nutrients associated with lower serum uric acid levels.
3. Water A very safe and easy way to prevent recurrent gout attacks is to drink more water. A possible trigger for gout attacks might be dehydration. A 2009 study revealed that participants who drank 5-8 glasses water a day had a 43% reduction in gout attacks while those drinking more than 8 glasses a day had a 48% reduction.
