Intermittent Fasting: Coffee With Oat Milk

Can You Drink Coffee While Intermittent Fasting

Since the food industry jumped on the vegan hype train, oat milk is currently enjoying great popularity.

But have you ever thought about the fact that it might be unnatural to make a milk substitute from grains? Where does the fat content come from, which you need for creaminess?

As I suspected, the fat in popular brands comes from industrially processed vegetable oils, such as canola oil.

To produce oil artificially from a non-oily plant is not only unnatural but also harms your health significantly.

Since chemical processing damages highly sensitive omega-6 fatty acids, they promote free radicals in your body.

Accordingly, your body should probably not use these broken fats as essential building blocks of your brain cells. Dont you think so?

Hence, for people who are intermittent fasting for health reasons, oat milk is not an option.

So, what about weight loss?

Besides the 7.5 grams of fat from canola oil, a glass of oat milk has a staggering 16.5 grams of carbohydrates, of which 10 grams are table sugar .

Thus, we no longer need to debate. Thats the last nail in the coffin for oat milk during intermittent fasting.

Since even a shot of oat milk triggers a blood sugar and insulin spike, you better put it into the sink.

When Does Coffee Break Your Fast

There are two big things things in general that will break a fast:

  • Anything with calories
  • Anything with a sweet taste

While not all fasting experts agree on this, the short answer is if youre having either of these things while fasting for weight loss, youre making your fasted time harder on yourself.

This includes adding artificial sweeteners, heavy cream, and even that seemingly harmless splash of milk.

Some More Words About This Dietary Plan

Such adietary plan should decrease your calorie intake and subsequently helps to lose weight. In combination with regular training sessions can be an effective way to achieve your fitness goal. Moreover, intermittent fasting has a host of other health benefits. It can decrease the risk of diabetes, arthritis, asthma, Alzheimers disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis and even certain types of cancer. The only one thing you should keep in mind is that fasting is not for everyone. Some people may face headaches, insomnia, fatigue, nausea and other side effects . Thats why it is important to consult a healthcare professional before starting this nutrition plan.

There are no specific restrictions or recommendations concerning which foods to eat and which ones to avoid during your non-fasting days or hours. Its self-explanatory that in order to slim down faster, it is better to choose healthy meals, packed with vitamins instead of junk food and processed foods.

Benefits Of Flavored Coffee Beans While Intermittent Fasting

Coffee, in any form, is an appetite suppressant, so it helps to make intermittent fasting a little easier.

If youre fasting to manage blood sugar, coffee is also great to have. One study showed coffee is associated with better insulin sensitivity. However, intermittent fasting, in general, has the same benefit, so if youre only an occasional coffee drinker, you dont have to start having it daily.

Another study showed coffee triggered autophagy in mice. While we need more studies to say for certain if this effect happens in humans as well, the results are promising for those who fast for autophagy.

If the coffee youre drinking was flavored during the roasting process and has only natural ingredients, you will get all these benefits by drinking it. Also, flavored coffee could help curb your sweet tooth, which can be extremely helpful during a fast.

One Thing To Always Avoid

Can You Drink Coffee While Doing Intermittent Fasting?

Despite the fact that they don’t contain calories, most of the experts we spoke with said zero-calorie sweeteners should be avoided during a fastâand pretty much all the time.

“I’m not a fan of artificial sweeteners at all,” says Pedre. “Technically these have zero calories, so they would be ‘legal’ during a fast, but we’ve seen how they can disrupt gut balance and cause lots more problems. I would steer clear of them altogether, and if you need a sweetener, use organic 100% stevia sparingly during fasting hours.”

Miller agrees, explaining that even though something has zero calories, it can still negate some of fasting’s most significant benefits, including appetite control. “Just because something is noncaloric doesn’t mean it is free of metabolic influence,” says Miller. “The taste of sweet impacts GLP-1 receptors on the tongue, which enhances insulin releaseâthis is not ideal, as insulin has a negative impact on fasting and may drive blood sugar drops.” And blood sugar drops, as we all know, can make us miserable and hangry.

Cream In Coffee When Fasting: The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that intermittent fasting is a tool that can help you reach your weight loss goal. If cream in your coffee makes it easier for you to stretch out the time between meals, then it is helping, not hurting.

My husband, Keith, lost 80 pounds using intermittent fasting paired with a low-carb and then keto diet.

During his fasting periods, he added cream to his coffee, which made his weight loss journey easier and more enjoyable. His results show that consuming cream did not take away from the effectiveness of his plan.

Is Intermittent Fasting Safe

People can begin intermittent fasting for a variety of reasons. Some may begin to lose and manage weight and while others may be using intermittent fasting to address other health issues that could use a change in diet.

Regardless of reasoning, anyone planning to begin IF should consult and receive approval from their primary care doctor. If youre pregnant, breastfeeding, or have medical problems like, intermittent fasting may not be right for you.

If you begin intermittent fasting and experience unusual headaches, mental health disturbances such as anxiety or depression or have unusual changes in mood, consult with your primary healthcare provider to determine the best strategy or plan for your individual wellness.

Intermittent fasting is not for everyone. Even if intermittent fasting is safe for you, it might not be the right diet for you.

If you find that IF makes you feel good and supports your health journey, thats wonderful! Youre joining a large community of fasters who have also found that IF enriches their life. If you find that intermittent fasting triggers disordered eating habits, makes you feel icky, or otherwise isnt the best option for your nutritional needs, thats OK too! Ketosis And Weight Loss

Since fasting is the most effective way to lower insulin levels, it is essential for weight loss. Accordingly, insulin is the crucial storage hormone in the human body.

Therefore, it is responsible for signaling cells to take up glucose from the bloodstream and store excess energy as fat or glycogen.

Furthermore, insulin blocks the enzyme that can break down body fat .

Accordingly, scientists can predict about 75% of possible weight gain and loss in overweight people by analyzing their insulin levels .

The 16-hours of fasting cut off the supply of nutrients, lower insulin levels, and thus end the bodys storage mode.

The body can then begin to break down the carbohydrate stores . Once the glycogen stores are empty, your body can start to burn stored fat for energy.

This fat burning process is called ketosis and, contrary to many myths, is an entirely natural mechanism that has ensured our species survival.

Nature has designed the body to build up fat reserves during abundance and tap into this body fat for energy when food is scarce.

Nowadays, instead of food shortages, we experience an endless summer and eat round the clock. Thus, we gain weight.

Therefore, intermittent fasting can help to restore the natural balance between feasting and fasting.

What Can You Put In Your Coffee That Wont Break Your Fast

Can You Drink Coffee While Fasting?

Although black coffee is perfectly acceptable for an intermittent fast, you may want to know if you can still add any of your usual mix-ins to your cup. In general, many health experts claim a fast isnt broken if you consume less than 50 calories within the timeframe of the fast. With this in mind, lets go over intermittent fasting coffee additions that wont break your fast.

Fats

From strictly a calorie perspective, technically, youre not fasting if you add any of these to your coffee because they all contain calories. However, fats themselves wont influence your insulin or blood sugar levels, so theyre the most recommended choice if youre looking to boost your insulin sensitivity .

While you may have heard recommendations for bulletproof coffee made by adding butter and MCT oil to coffee be aware that it contains over 230 calories in a 16-ounce serving . This fatty concoction is great for those on the keto diet, but it pushes the envelope when it comes to fasting. Its worth noting, though, that if youre fasting for weight loss, a little bit of fat may also help curb your craving so you can fast longer.

To maintain your fast, add only a small amount of either MCT oil, butter, or coconut oil to keep it under 50 calories.

Although herbal and fruit tea is prevalent here in Central Europe, they are often big surprises. You usually cannot be sure what is inside.

Besides regular dried fruits, candied fruits often hide in fruit tea. Moreover, they often hide in herbal tea as well. And their sugar content will break a fast.

Accordingly, the variance in fruit tea is large . Like green tea, it can contain almost none, just too many for intermittent fasting, or a vast amount of hidden carbohydrates.

Therefore, as with food purchases, the basic rule is: read the label carefully and avoid any suspicious contents. The same applies to herbal tea, which tends to perform better because it does not commonly contain dried fruits.

If you want to be on the safe side, do not drink herbal or fruit tea during intermittent fasting.

Will Adding Ingredients To Coffee Break The Fast

While black coffee has many positives, adding in other items may stop the fast.

During intermittent fasting coffee with sugar or milk is a big no-no. Save those high-calorie, sweetened drinks for your eating window if you must indulge.

If you need your morning coffee and are wondering if there is any intermittent fasting coffee creamer you can have, try adding a teaspoon of healthy fat such as heavy cream or coconut oil. Some people ask about intermittent fasting and bulletproof coffee which combines coffee, MCT oil, and ghee butter. All these high-fat content items are less likely to raise insulin levels, which breaks the fast. But technically, adding them does break the fast and stops autophagy from occurring.

If weight loss isn’t your primary goal with intermittent fasting, adding these high-fat ingredients to your coffee may make it easier for you to extend the length of time before your next meal.

For women, adding small amounts of fat into coffee may be helpful for hormonal balance.

If you are not getting your desired results on the scale, consider cutting out the additives altogether.

Consideration #: Insulin Was Not Directly Tested

Can I Drink Black Coffee while Intermittent Fasting?

Secondly, we did not directly test insulin, which is the hormone that determines if fat is to go into and out of storage. Insulin is not something that you can test at home. If you experience a rise in blood glucose and a drop in ketones after consuming food, it is fair to assume that insulin is entering your blood.

Heavy cream is mostly fat and fat has been shown to produce little if any change in insulin levels. Despite the fact that we dont clearly know what was happening to our insulin levels, we felt fairly comfortable stating that cream did not cause a significant rise in insulin.

Intermittent Fasting: Coffee With Creamer

Creamer and similar additives in powder form are highly processed. Therefore, these are absolute junk!

They are loaded with carbohydrates, proteins, and fat. Moreover, some creamers consist of up to 50% sugar.

If you like your body, you should avoid these junk additives not only during fasting.

Questions About How To Start Intermittent Fasting

Let’s get started with some questions about what intermittent fasting is, common mistakes that people make, and how to get started properly

I’ve been following the Paleo diet for the last 2 months and I am getting interested in trying an intermittent fasting protocol. Should I wait longer before starting a protocol? Or is it advisable to jump into one, being that it’s been a relatively short period of time with the new diet?Chris P.

This is a good question to start with.

As Chris said, there are different styles of intermittent fasting. So, the first step is deciding which one to do. To make it easy for you, I broke down the major types of intermittent fasting and how to do them in the beginner’s guide to intermittent fasting.

Personally, I do a daily fast where I eat all of my meals in an 8hour window and then spend the rest of the day and night fasting.

That said, it’s important to note that intermittent fasting isn’t a diet. It’s simply a schedule for eating. Or to put it another way, intermittent fasting is about when you eat, not what you eat. Of course, you’ll probably see better results if you’re eating a diet of real, unprocessed foods in addition to intermittent fasting.

This brings me to the second part of Chris’ question. If you feel comfortable with your diet , then I see no reason to wait to start intermittent fasting.

Have you had any experience with skipping breakfast, but still having coffee in the morning?Darius B.

Intermittent Fasting: Coffee With Half And Half

Since cream and regular milk can break a fast, half and half can too. Due to the significant mix of protein and carbs, half and half inhibits fasting benefits.

Furthermore, half and half is more likely to contain processed additives.

So regular kinds of milk are not safe for fasting. Can coffee with almond milk be an alternative for intermittent fasting?

Fasting And Artificial Sweeteners

Can you drink coffee during intermittent fasting?

Sweet taste is a much-discussed topic regarding intermittent fasting and the keto diet. On the one hand, it is difficult to get away from it. On the other hand, it substantially promotes cravings.

Most sugar-free sweeteners have zero protein, carbohydrates, and calories. Therefore, they do not raise the blood sugar level. But is the calculation that simple?

No, since people often forget that both intermittent fasting and keto have one essential goal: Lowering insulin levels to allow your body to tap into stored fat for energy.

Since the storage hormone, insulin, prevents body fat breakdown and ketone production, a significant increase in insulin levels breaks the fast.

Unfortunately, most diet gurus have not done their homework in this context.

As endocrinologist and fasting pioneer Dr. Jason Fung correctly points out, it does not matter whether food increases blood sugar levels as long as it increases insulin levels .
