But how does it measure up in a crowded espresso machine field?
Just a note that this machine is called the Sage Dual Boiler in Europe. Its exactly the same machine and company, but there was already a Breville brand of kitchen appliances in Europe when Breville started selling there. So they decided to rebrand as Sage to avoid confusion.
Here youll find our complete Breville Dual Boiler review. Weve scoured the internet for all the reviews to collate with our own, meaning we have the most comprehensive espresso machine review you can find. Whilst not all home coffee experts give numerical scores, we have averaged these out. So, you can get a consensus opinion on how good it really is and know for sure if it is right for you.

Verdict: The Dual Boiler
The Dual Boiler among fans just called BDB is a unique espresso machine.
Ten years after its launch, it still occupies a prominent position in the espresso machine landscape.
Its the obvious choice if consistency and quality are what youre looking for.
If youre frustrated with your current single boiler or thermo-coil machine, you can upgrade to this device and say goodbye to all frustrations.
But thats also the downside of the Breville Dual Boiler.
In most ways, its an end-game espresso machine, and its expensive enough that most people would consider it as such. But on the other hand, many coffee lovers would probably still have that nagging doubt and consider if the grass would be greener with an Italian brass and steel model.
The thing is that espresso makers are also about identity. While most people end up going with sensible, when it comes to getting a car, things are different in the coffee domain. Here you can afford to be a bit reckless. If you want a statement piece, its a lot easier to justify.
But for the confident coffee geek, whos not ready to splurge on a Decent, you wont get better espresso from a domestic machine in this price range and a good step above.

Alternatives To The Breville / Sage Dual Boiler
So you want a super-advanced espresso machine that can brew and steam like a champ? What options do you have?
Well, of course, you still have all the Italian produced E61 type machines that will probably remain popular for a long time. However, they arent as advanced as the Dual Boiler.
The No products found. is slowly starting to catch up, but it also has its own set of compromises.
The obvious step up is the , which is by far the most advanced espresso machine available today. However, its also a lot more expensive than the Dual Boiler.
Also, while the Dual Boiler is still an espresso machine for all intents and purposes, its hard to get into the Decent ecosystem without buying into that geek/scientist ethos.

At the heart of this machine is its dual boiler heating system. The boiler, for the espresso shot, is PID temperature controlled, while a separate steam boiler offers instant and powerful steam on demand. So you can extract your shot at the right temperature, delivering optimal flavor, while simultaneously steaming your milk to cafe quality.

Coffee Quality & Versatility 45/5
Thanks to features like PID temperature control and pre-infusion, the Breville Dual Boiler produces incredible espresso. Coffee expert and former World Barista Champion James Hoffmann agreed, even when comparing it against some well-known prosumer machines.
Its a capable machine when it comes to brewing good espresso.
Because the temperature is accurate and adjustable, you can dial in the ideal brewing conditions for your favorite coffee beans. For example, light roasts typically excel with a finer grind, longer and lower pressure pre-infusion, and a hotter brew temperature . And the BDB will let you play with all those variables in the quest for the perfect espresso extraction.
It also has a brew pressure gauge to help with the dialing-in process. By monitoring the pressure gauge, youll know when youve got the right grind size to hit the 9 bars of pressure recommended for the best extraction .
The Dual Boiler relies on an OPV valve to release excess pressure, and this will keep you from hitting too high a pressure, resulting in a bitter or astringent espresso shot. Unfortunately, this models OPV isnt easily adjustable, so its not straightforward to play with different brewing pressures.
Not just an espresso machine
This isnt just an espresso machine it also steams milk. And it does this very effectively, whether you want a creamy latte or a foamy cappuccino.

Performance: Good Espresso Not Very Quick
To use the machine, we turned it on and waited for it to heat upit took about 10 minutes until it reached 200 degrees. Once it reached the set heat, we placed the portafilter with packed espresso grounds inside the filter into the group head on the machine. Correct dosage and tamping recommendations can be found in the manual.
Depending on which size filter was used, we selected the size of our shot and pressed the corresponding button1 cup or 2 cupto extract the shot. The extraction time in the default settings takes 30 seconds to pull the shot, but you can change that time in the more advanced settings or stop the extraction early by pressing the button again.
Theres no doubt that the Dual Boiler makes high-quality espresso. We used the default settings most of the time when making our shots, and we found that the espresso consistently tasted like what we would get from a local coffee shop.
There was consistently a crema atop the espresso, which adds a rich flavor to the shot, and the drink didnt have a burnt or dull taste as long as we properly cleaned our machine after each use. We also made cappuccinos, lattes, and macchiatos using the steam wand function .
However, to begin enjoying an espresso beverage, we had to wait for the machine to heat up, which can take up to 10 minutes, and thats not including the time it takes to steam milk if we wanted to make a latte or cappuccino. The time to make an espresso beverage withmilk foam was closer to 15 minutes.
Does The Dual Boiler Use Beans Grounds Or Pods
The Breville Dual Boiler is designed to be used with ground coffee. But its really aimed at the espresso lover, so it needs to be fresh ground to get the best results. This means buying a separate grinder, unfortunately.
Breville offers a really good deal on a bundle with the Dual Boiler and the Smart Grinder Pro. Occasionally you can pick this up for the same price or cheaper than the Dual Boiler on its own. This is an elegant solution and also means you can use the grinder for French press, pour-over, AeroPress, or any other brewing method you like.
There are, of course, more budget-friendly grinders available but you need to make sure its one designed for espresso to get the best out of the Breville Dual Boiler espresso machine.

Why Should You Get A Dual Boiler
Dual boiler espresso machines use two different water boilers that each have their own heating elements: One for espresso and one for steaming. This allows the machine to heat up to two different temperatures simultaneously.
The result is much more temperature control throughout the entire brewing process since you dont have to purge water or wait for heating or cooling when going from brewing to steaming. Or vice versa.
Actually, you can steam while you brew!
If you have ever used a single boiler machine, you know how frustrating this can be.
Getting a single boiler to the right temperature is tedious, especially if youre making more than one drink.
Profitec Pro 300 Espresso Machine Overview
The first machine were going to look at is the Profitec Pro 300. If you’re interested in a dual-boiler espresso machine at a great value, this is for you.
The Pro 300 features German-made, commercial-grade components with an internal layout designed for easy access and simple maintenance. Copper and braided stainless steel high-pressure lines, as well as a vibration pump that sits on rubber mounts keep the machine running smoothly and quietly while brewing.
With a polished stainless steel exterior, the external layout is no slouch, either. The front panel includes a steam pressure gauge and Gicar PID controller to easily monitor steam pressure and temperature. The PID maintains temperature stability to within a degree of the desired temperature and features a shot timer for more precise pulls. Just as well, the PID controller lets you adjust brew and steam temperatures to pull different flavors from high-altitude coffee while brewing, or get a little more kick while steaming.
We clocked warm-up times of roughly 10 minutes from power-on to brew-ready, roughly 1/3rd of typical prosumer machine heat up times. This is thanks to the brew boiler which is mounted directly above the brew group to provide heat passively as the machine warms up. Steam performance is respectable and the two-hole steam tip is perfect for high-speed frothing, dispensing high pressure over a wide area. The steam boiler can also be turned off when not being used to conserve energy.

Design: Commercial Features In A Home Design
The Dual Boiler offers several features that typically arent found in at-home espresso machines. For example, as the name implies, this machine has two separate stainless steel boilers and dual Italian pumps, which allow you to make espresso while simultaneously steaming milk. It also has a 15-bar pump systemthis refers to the amount of pressure that gets applied to the coffee groundswhich is widely considered the sweet spot for making the best espresso.
Another commercial feature on this product is its customizable settings for extraction temperature, shot volume, shot duration, steam temperature, pre-infusion duration, and pre-infusion power. This allowed us to make an espresso shot to our exact preference, and the Dual Boiler also has a hot water outlet that let us make hot water for tea and other hot drinks.
As for the aesthetics, the Dual Boiler boasts a sleek, upscale look that is sure to fit into any kitchen design. We have the stainless steel version, and it looks great with the rest of our home appliances. The only issue we ran into with this machines design was finding enough room for it on our kitchen counter. Its quite bulky, measuring 14.7 x 14.8 x 14.7 inches, and it weighs a hefty 30 pounds. We had to do some rearranging before finding the right spot for it.
Machine Vs Appliance Grade Quality
In terms of overall quality, the Profitec Pro 300 edges ahead by a considerable margin. Between the stainless steel housing, elegant interior, and impeccable welding, you can tell that the small details are important to Profitec. Because the Pro 300 is a proper prosumer-level machine, you can expect better longevity, reliability, and overall craftsmanship than the Breville Dual Boiler.
For what it’s worth, Pro 300’s parts are German engineered and the machine itself is hand-assembled in Milan, Italy. The Breville Dual Boiler is factory made in Asia.
