Nespresso VertuoPlus: How To – Descaling

To get started descaling your machine, youll need to start by gathering a descaling kit, clean water, and a large container.

You can get the kits from your local Nespresso store or by ordering them online. The kit contains a descaling solution, which is a special chemical fluid that cleans minerals and residue out of your Nespresso machine.

With your gear in hand, start by making sure your Nespresso Vertuo is empty. If youre anything like me, you might have accidentally left a coffee pod in the machine once or twice!

Next, place the container under the liquid output of the machine. This is going to collect all the water that you flush out of your device.

Then, put the descaling fluid into the Nespresso coffee machine with 1/2 tank of water in the water tank.

How Often Should You Descale A Nespresso Vertuo Machine

Nespresso recommends descaling the VertuoLine machine every three months or every 300 capsules, whichever comes first.

In my experience, the 300 capsules are going to come far before the three months is up!

Now, there are other factors that can affect how often you should descale your machine. For instance, the age of the machine, frequency of use, and how hard the water is.

Still, in general, its best to stick to what Nespresso says.

After all, these are their machines and they know what theyre talking about when it comes to cleaning and upkeep.

Rinse With Cold Water

Next, you need to rinse the machine out with cold water, so make sure you have an empty water container under the spout that can take the full amount of water the machine holds. If you dont have one big enough, you can use two and swap one out when its full and the machine is on pause between dispensing water.

With a regular Nespresso machine, you need to rinse twice. Each time fill the cold water reservoir to the top and then press the button you used to run the cleaning cycle to flush through the water. Repeat for the second run of cold water.

If you have a Nespresso Vertuo machine, you get a larger water reservoir, so you only need to flush the once with the full water capacity.

Why Is There A Need To Descale A Nespresso Coffee Machine

Descaling is a cleaning process that removes or prevents the accumulation of these metals/limescale. When you brew your drinks, either espresso or milk-based , the minerals from the water build up in the heating system of the machine. Due to the accumulation of these minerals , the water does not reach its optimum temperature, and the delivered coffee is not too hot. It also affects the machines performance and the quality and taste of your coffee. So maintaining your device, means regularly cleaning it and occasionally performing a deeper clean.

How To Descale Nespresso With Vinegar And Water Solution

While Nespresso doesnt recommend using vinegar in its coffee machines, I have done it, and it works. Use this at your own discretion.

Its a pretty simple process.

  • First, empty the water container and capsule holder and put in a mixture of half water and half vinegar in your Nespresso water container. Just like you would with the descaling liquid.
  • Second, simultaneously press both the Espresso and Lungo buttons on the top of the machine.
  • Third, hold down the Lungo and press it until the machine has run the mixture through.
  • Fourth, place fresh water in the canister and run several clean water cycles through until you are sure all the sediment and calcium have been removed and you no longer have vinegar in the water.

Nespresso Machine Descaling Process

If you want to keep your machine in a good position and enhance its lifespan, descale it after six months. If you dont descale the device, the minerals will build up in the boiler, and the coffee will come out slowly as water flow is disrupted. The device will work harder, and your machines system will clog or block. It will adversely affect the machines performance and the taste of your coffee. The descaling process includes the following steps

  • Select Descaling Liquid
  • Choose your desired descaling solution. You can use the Nespresso descaling solution or commercially available solution. You can also make descaling solutions such as dilute vinegar, lemon juice, or citric acid. Choose according to your preference.

  • Add Descaling Liquid
  • Add the desired descaling solution to the water tank. Use a 1:3 solution, i.e., mix one part of the descaling solution in three parts of clean water. After filling, fix the water tank back to its position. Also, empty the capsule receptacle and place a large container under the spout.

  • Start Descaling/Enter descaling mode
  • In VertuoLine machines, press the lever and brew button for three seconds to activate the descaling mode. In OriginalLine devices, press both the espresso and the lungo buttons simultaneously for three seconds, and the machine beeps, and it will activate the descaling mode. The process will stop when the reservoir is empty, and the green light will show up.

  • Rinse with clean water
  • Exit descaling mode
