No Espresso Machine No Problem

Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso

Many people dont have an espresso machine at home, but that doesnt mean they have to skip this Starbucks copycat recipe. The most straightforward solution is to make this recipe using a premium coffee, like Veranda Blend from Starbucks, and double brewing it.

Or, you can try using an instant espresso. Medaglia DOro Espresso Style Instant Coffee and Café Bustelo Espresso Style Instant Coffee are outstanding choices.

Can I Make This With Coffee

The answer is yes! To be honest I have only made this with coffee. I use Starbucks Medium roast unsweetened iced coffee to make this recipe. If you would prefer to brew your own coffee, you can do that as well, let it cool and add ice if you would like. I dont like to add my ice cubes immediately because it makes the coffee watery and I like my coffee super strong.

Why This Is The Best Iced Oat Milk Shaken Espresso Recipe

Its the brown sugar spiced syrup that turns this ordinary iced latte into a must-try drink. The warmth of the cinnamon combines perfectly with the rich sweetness of the brown sugar and the hint of vanilla to soften out the harsh bitterness of the espresso.

The result is a smooth-drinking, sophisticated beverage that is not overly sweet or cloying.

What If Its Too Sweet Or Not Sweet Enough For Me

How To Make An Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

This unique coffee drink really couldn’t be easier to make! You’ll find a detailed, printable recipe at the end of this post, but here’s an overview of the steps:

  • Prepare simple syrup. To make the brown sugar syrup, simply combine equal amounts of brown sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stirring constantly, cook the syrup until it’s hot and all the sugar crystals have dissolved. You don’t need to simmer or boil it. Let cool completely before using. Tip: For extra cinnamon flavor, add a cinnamon stick to the syrup as you cook it. Let the syrup cool, then remove the stick before using.
  • Combine espresso and syrup. Brew the espresso using your preferred method , then mix it with 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons of syrup in a cocktail shaker. I prefer to use 1 ½ tablespoons, but if you like sweeter drinks, then use 2 tablespoons. Tip: Stirring these two ingredients together before adding the ice, will cool down the espresso, which makes the finished drink less watery.
  • Fill shaker with ice and shake. After you’ve stirred the espresso and syrup together, fill the shaker half-full with ice. Then, shake the ingredients together for about 10 to 15 seconds. If you have single-walled shaker, like mine, the outside will be cold and covered with condensation . Tip: Don’t skimp on the ice … the less you use, the more watered down your drink will be.
  • That’s really all there is to it! Simple, right?

    • Stir the mixture occasionally until the brown sugar is completely dissolved.
    • Remove the heat. After cooling, transfer the syrup into a sealed container and keep it inside the freezer.

Introducing The New Starbucks Drink: The Iced Toasted Vanilla Oat Milk Shaken Espresso

It may technically still be winter, but thatâs not a factor for the new Starbucks drink. And besides, lets be honest: Many of us are ordering iced coffee 365 days a year, no matter the temperature. And now that spring is finally, maybe, sort of arriving soon, we have all the more reason to pick up an iced bev.

Luckily, Starbucks is listening to what the people want. Following the success of the Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso and Iced Chocolate Almond Milk Shaken Espresso, the chain is launching a brand-new shaken iced espresso drink, just in time for sunnier days ahead.

I got a chance to try the drink early and am thrilled to report its creamy, just sweet enough, and generally the perfect pick-me-upespecially for a midday coffee run. Even better, the Iced Toasted Vanilla Oat Milk Shaken Espresso makes a great light option, with a grande coming in at fewer than 200 calories.

As always with Starbucks, you have the ability to customize it any way you like. If oat milk isnt your speed, the toasty vanilla notes would play well with almond or coconut milks. And if youre one of those people who simply cant drink an iced coffee when its freezing out, I hear you and support you and want you to know you can get it hot too.

    Iced Honey Almondmilk Flat White

Is the Iced Honey Almondmilk Flat White the very best of the menu in our opinion? Its definitely one of them. What keeps it from ranking higher mostly comes down to the milk: Its light and tastes kind of flavorless, almost like your coffee is just mixed with weird nut-flavored water. However, just because theres almond milk in the mix doesnt mean its a bad drink, especially if this sort of creamer is your thing. The touch of honey is really nice, as it adds a sweetness to the drink that is more subtle than in many other Starbucks offerings. Plus, we love that Starbucks serves iced flat whites they only have two varieties on the menu, so it feels like something special.

Basically, if you like both almond milk and espresso, theres a good chance that youre going to love this drink. If you prefer other types of non-dairy milk, though, there are even better options for you. Try it for yourself so you can decide whether or not this is the Starbucks special that will be your new favorite.

How To Make A Homemade Iced Oat Milk Shaken Espresso:

I like to first prep the brown sugar and cinnamon syrup before making my shots of espresso. I find this works best by building it into a glass mason jar because a metal shaker can get really hot to the touch.

In a glass jar add 3 tbsp. of very hot water. I use the hottest water that will come out of my sink or you can microwave some water for about 45-60 sec. Add the hot water to the jar then mix in the low carb brown sugar.

Because I eat a lower carb diet, I do not prefer my drinks to be too sweet. I prefer 3-4 tablespoons of the brown sugar in this recipe. Adjust as needed for your preference.

Next, add in about 1/4 tsp of cinnamon. I like a little and find a little really does go a long way. You can add a little more to the top for garnish to help amp up the cinnamon flavor.

Once everything is in the mason jar, give it a really good shake so the low carb sweetener dissolves. Pour in your 2 shots of espresso and shake again! Pour in your oat milk and ice and top it off with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

How Does The New Drink Taste

I shared my first impressions of the new Iced Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso in a YouTube video.

Honestly, I wasnât that impressed by it. Again, I love the OG oatmilk shaken espresso that Starbucks makes with brown sugar. Oatmilk is naturally less creamy than cowâs milk, and has a toasty, nutty flavor. The brown sugar feels like it complements that, adding some much-needed depth to the drink thatâs lost when you leave out the dairy milk.

To me, the vanilla flavor in the Toasted Vanilla Oatmilk Shaken Espresso felt too thin and surface-level. It felt like the drink was just flavored like vanilla, rather than the vanilla flavor integrating with the other flavors in it. I felt like I could be drinking an iced espresso with a bit of vanilla extract thrown in, versus with the brown sugar version of the drink, where it feels like the sugar adds depth, sweetness, and caramel notes. I also didnât taste the âtoastedâ element to the vanillaâagain, it just felt like Starbcucksâ normal vanilla syrup.

Still, the drink is definitely refreshing, and thereâs the caffeine kick to enjoy. I can see why itâs more of a Spring drink, versus the deep toastiness of the OG shaken espresso, which feels more suited to cold winters. Some people seem to really enjoy it, based on early reviews. Itâs also cool that itâs officially vegan and approved by PETA.
