Nespresso Original And Vertuo Machine

Nespresso Vertuo Vs Originalline: Differences In Cost & Features

Nespresso Vertuo vs Nespresso Original

As mentioned earlier, these two models offer similar functionality, so what determines which one you should buy depends entirely upon personal preference.

However, we would recommend that you consider the factors before choosing model:

Price The price differences in variety between the two ranges starts off as small, but quickly adds up over time.

For example, the cheapest coffee machine version of each range costs around £100 less than the next cheaper model.

If you plan to use them regularly, then this could add up to hundreds of pounds within a few years.

So, how do you decide which model to purchase? Well, firstly, think about how often youll need to make different types of beverages.

Do you prefer stronger coffee or light cappuccinos? Do you want to enjoy a latte macchiato or a mocha frappe?

Then, take note of the biggest differences in pricing.

Weve already highlighted the fact that the more expensive models tend to include extra features such as larger water tanks and better quality components.

But, remember that all machines come with their own set of pros and cons.

So, weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of each type carefully before deciding which one suits you best.

Meet Vertuo And Vertuoplus

Prepare your small or large coffee style with generous crema, all at the touch of a button. Heres the secret: each Vertuo machine uses barcode recognition and a patented extraction extraction system to create your favourite coffee.

You can also electronically open and close the head of the machine and conveniently position the water tank with VertuoPlus.

What To Look For

Key differences between Nespresso machines that you’ll want to consider are:

  • Size – Nespresso machines range from tiny models around the size of a travel kettle to substantial machines approximately half the size of a microwave.
  • Capacity – the size of water tank and capsule bin vary between models, which affects how often you’ll need to add more water and empty the bin, especially if you’re using the largest Vertuo capsules.
  • Milk frothing – if you want to be completely hands-off, choose a model with automatic frothing from the Lattissima range. Other models either have a steam pipe for manual frothing , or can be bought with the standalone Aeroccino 3 automatic milk frother for around £50 extra.
  • Personalisation – some models offer you additional control over the temperature and length of your brew. The Creatista allows you 11 different levels of milk frothing, for precise coffee-making.
  • Smartphone controls – the Expert machines can be controlled via the Nespresso app on your smartphone or tablet, using Bluetooth.

What Coffee Pods Are Compatible With Nespresso Vertuo

Can you use original Nespresso pods in VertuoLine? Unfortunately, the answer is no. The new capsules used for Nespresso VertuoLine machines are made differently than pods for the Nespresso OriginalLine machines. This means you cant switch back and forth between pods.

The big difference is in the shape. VertuoLine capsules are dome shaped. This means no matter how hard you try, theyre not going to fit into a Nespresso OriginalLine machine. The same goes the other way around. You can only use original with original and VertuoLine with VertuoLine.

But Vertuo still offers a huge list of compatible coffee pods. Some of the most popular pods come from Starbucks, with the company offering many blends, from Sumatra to Espresso Roast to Decaffeinated Espresso.

Coffee Pod Review: Nespresso Original vs. Nespresso Vertuo

Yes! The Vertuo machines allow users to choose what beans they want to grind themselves.

This makes it possible to create custom blends just for yourself.

In fact, there are many people out there who prefer grinding their own coffee rather than buying preground coffee.

They say that freshly brewed coffee drinks tastes better than anything else.

However, it is important that the cups of coffee is ground to the correct single size, as per Nespresso instructions.

Comparison Of Nespresso Originalline And Vertuoline

Single-serve coffee pods and the machines that use them only seem like a new phenomenon. The Nespresso, however, is 39 years old. First introduced in Switzerland in 1976, it took some time to catch on. Nespresso SA would be founded as a Nestle subsidiary in 1986, with machines and coffee pods hitting the Swiss market in force by 1989, followed by the French and American markets in 1991. The early Nespresso system was boxy and utilitarian, but the Concept machine of 2001, followed by the Essenza in 2004, introduced Nespresso in the form the public knows today. In the decade since, the number of machines and the coffees available for them has grown, as has the companys share of the market. Thats partly thanks to the explosion of the single-serve market, as well as the machines design, which fuses modernist class with reliable function.

How To Choose The Bestnespresso Coffee Machine For You

First, Nespresso coffee machines are divided into two categories: Original and Vertuo. The Original line only makes espresso-based drinks, but their variety expands with the complexity and price of the machine. The Vertuo line can make a wider range of drink sizes, including espressos, double espressos and lungos , in addition to regular cups of drip-style coffee in both eight-ounce and 12-ounce sizes.

Where you’d like to buy capsules also makes a difference. The Original line is compatible with Nespresso-brand capsules, plus other lines like Williams Sonoma and illy. The Vertuo series machines are only compatible with Nespresso-brand capsules. All capsules are recyclable through Nespresso.

It’s All About The Taste

As we mentioned, the classic Nespresso machines use pressure technology, while the virtual machines use centrifugal technology when brewing. Inevitably, this leads to large differences in the taste and texture of the beverages you’re making.

Since the virtual machines use a lower temperature for their brewing process, this produces a milder drink. If you enjoy a hotter coffee, this machine may not be ideal for you. Because the original machines use hotter temperatures, more oil is extracted in the brew, making the espresso bolder as a result.

On the other hand, the Vertuo’s lower temperature has a benefit that can be explained in one word: Crema

Nespresso Vertuo Vs Original: Drink Options And Sizes

Nespresso Vertuo Plus First Use

Time to talk drink sizingNespresso VertuoLine capsules come in three different sizes, so larger drinks can be as strong as smaller ones. In total those three sizes will make 5 different coffee drinks. Nespresso Original Pods only come in one size and are meant to make espresso, double espresso or a luongo.

Now, you can make a bigger coffee with an original pod by adding more water, but it is obviously more diluted something you dont get with the Vertuo. With that said, both the Nespresso and Virtuo machines let you permanently alter the drink size to your tastes yes even the Nespresso Vertuo capsules with the special barcode can be easily reprogrammed to make the drink you want. Ive got videos here on the channel that show you how to do that on both types of machines.

I have a how to video that can show you how to do this, right here on the blog.

Nespresso Vertuo Next Vs Nespresso Vertuo Plus: Which Single

ByCarrie-Ann Skinnerlast updated 24 March 22

Enjoying a barista-worthy coffee at home not only saves money over getting your daily caffeine fix from a coffee shop, but weve found an even greater benefit: impress your friends and family by offering them an array of different hot drink options when they come to visit.

Nespresso is one of the biggest names in single-serve coffee makers. Also known as pod coffee machines, they use capsules containing ground coffee, which are punctured before pressurized hot water is passed through to brew coffee, ensuring it creates far less mess than traditional-style espresso machines.

The brand offers two different types of machine those that take the iconic dome-shaped pods, which are called Nespresso Original, and the Vertuo line. These latter machines take the larger Vertuo capsules, which were first introduced in the US in 2014, and launched in the UK and Australia in 2014. Theres more of a focus on the Nespresso Vertuo line as the capsules feature barcodes, which contain information about the volume and temperature of the water during brewing, as well as other parameters. This ensures the perfect cup of java every time.

Nespresso Vertuoline Vs Original: Which Is Right For You

Few things in this world are as personal as coffee selection! As such, youll have to make your own decision as to which of the Nespresso machine lines will suit you and your coffee needs better.

If you prefer black coffees and want a variety of shot lengths, or if you tend to like longer shots on an espresso machine, then the five different options for shot length on the VertuoLine will undoubtedly impress you. If you prefer a variety of flavor options, shorter shots, or mixed coffee drinks, then the original line will be your best bet.

The choice is ultimately yours, but we hope this comparison of the two Nespresso machine lines has helped you narrow down which machine is right for your personal taste and preference!

Vertuoline Barcode Recognition Helps Pod Sizes But Blocks Third Party Pods

Nespresso Vertuo

Nespresso have designed a unique barcode system using the outside rim of their VertuoLine coffee pods. There is a barcode included with each capsule that tells the machine how large the coffee is going to be , which means the correct amount of water gets added.

There is also a secondary reason for this because Nespresso machines officially recognise different Vertuo coffee capsules, it may block the recognition of some third party Vertuo capsules. As a result, it makes buying non-Nespresso capsules a bit trickier. Even if you end up finding a capsule that works, theres no guarantee it will work indefinitely! Updates to Nespresso machines could end up blocking these in the future For this reason, many OriginalLine third party capsule makers have steered clear of making third party VertuoLine capsules to date. They could well exist en-masse in the future, though!

Upgrade Pick: Nespresso Essenza Plus

*At the time of publishing, the price was $210.

If you want a Nespresso machine that can make a wider variety of espresso drinks, we recommend the Nespresso Essenza Plus. This slightly larger machine can brew espressos, lungos, and ristrettoseverything the Essenza Mini canbut it can also brew two sizes of Americano by adding hot water to your espresso, so its an excellent option for households that enjoy different coffee drinks or for people who may want something more similar to regular coffee. The Essenza Plus also boasts a larger water tank and used-capsule tray than our top pick offers, and thanks to its few extra inches of height, it can accommodate taller cups than the Essenza Mini can.

To brew an Americano with the Essenza Plus, you simultaneously press the hot water button and either the espresso or lungo button, depending on the size of Americano you want. The hot water button also works on its own, as the water comes out of a separate spigot. Though this hot water feature initially struck us as an exciting option to brew tea, we found that the Essenza Pluss hot water comes out, at its hottest, at around 160 °Fnot hot enough for most teas. And if youve just brewed coffee, in order to avoid a muddied cup of water you have to wait several minutes for the spigot to stop dripping its final brown droplets before you can brew the hot water.

A New Millennium And A New Nespresso Begin

If the 1990s saw slow changes, occasional machines releases and 1-2 new capsules per year, at most, from 2000 the rate of events related to Nespresso skyrocketed.

The first boutique was opened in 2000 in Paris, France. Nespresso wasnt anymore just a brand that produced coffee machines and pods, but an actual brick and mortar store as well. The boutiques slowly grew to reach 816 in total, spread across 536 cities and 76 .

Meanwhile the production of new Nespresso machines expanded and grew as well. In 2001 the C190 Conceptmachine was launched, with a renewed look that did without the classic handle of an espresso machine but kept the steam wand. A sphere-looking machine, it was mostly, indeed, a concept one.

A collaboration with Saeco shortly followed it, making the Nespresso Saeco Automate machine. A sturdier, all metal machine that had a clear separation between the tray that hosted the coffee cup and the steam wand. It had the appearance of a professional machine, but it was still a consumers one.

The professional line of Nespresso machines would be enlarged in 2003 with the ES80 , the successor of 1996s ES100 . Curiously more similar to the C190 Concept machine than to a professional one.

In the same year, Nespresso produced the line of professional machines Gemini. Larger than before, capable of brewing two wholly separate coffee at the same time.

Black Coffee Or Mixed Beverage

Nespresso Vertuo Plus – Descaling & Cleaning

The second most prominent difference between the two Nespresso machine lines is that many of the original machines come with milk frothers. While the Vertuo machines offer variety in black coffee shots, the original devices enable you to make mixed coffee drinks like cappuccinos, lattes, and cafe au laits.

If you prefer variety in your black coffee, like longer shots, or dont mind purchasing a separate milk frother for mixed coffee drinks, then the VertuoLine will be a better option. If you mostly drink shorter shots or mixed coffee drinks, the original line will be a better choice for you.

So Who Wins In Nespresso Vertuo Vs Original

In my opinion, Nespressos original line is the winner out of the two. Youll have a lot more options in machines to choose from and Im sure youll find one you like. The original line also has more capsule varieties to choose from, not to mention theyll be cheaper than the Vertuo capsules.

What the Vertuo line is trying to do is to become a 2-in-1 machine by making both espresso and coffee, but it ends up not really doing either of them great. The better option for you would be getting an Original model for espresso and a small coffee maker on the side.

Fast Forward To Today: The Last Nespresso Machines Introduced

By 2015, with both the Original and Vertuo line working alongside each other, multiple lines of Nespresso machines for consumers and a sizable range of professional machines as well, the offering from Nespresso in terms of coffee and machines was fully formed. The rest is very recent history and mostly consists of upgrading of previously released machines or new yet similar machines to those already present on the market.

The Vertuo line saw an immediate successor to the Vertuo machine: the 2015s Evoluo. Similarly, the PixieClips was featured as an evolution of the original Pixie, with customizable sides of various colors to personalize your machine. The professional line saw the Aguila 220 as its new entry. A slightly more compact version of the veritably huge Aguila 420, it could brew two coffee cups at the same time instead of four.

From 2016 to today, among the upgraded versions of older models, an exception was surely the Prodigio Nespresso machine. Compact and with a design remotely reminiscent of the first Essenza, the Prodigio introduced Bluetooth connectivity to the line of Nespresso machines. A feature that we find on many nowadays, yet the Prodigio was the first one ever for Nespresso, back in 2016.

The last of the Aeroccinos, the 4, was also launched in 2016. With a little spout to pour the milk more accurately and a comfortable handle, the Aeroccino 4 is the natural, and so far last, evolution of the previous Aeroccinos.

Between Originalline And Vertuoline Which One Is Better

I personally feel OriginalLine is the winner here because its ecosystem is a lot more open than that of the VertuoLine. Add to that the bigger variety in OriginalLine models and the ability to froth milk in some machines, and the difference is obvious.

I think, at the end of the day, the difference boils down to:

  • If youre a coffee purist that wants authentic espresso and coffee, stick with OriginalLine. The coffee is stronger, hotter, and more intense all around
  • If youre an adventurer and like lots of foamy crema, then give VertuoLine a shot

The OriginalLine has a lot more flavors right now. Nespresso may or may not add more flavors to the Vertuoline to make it more appealing to a wider audience.

Weve already talked about the differences in extraction between VertuoLine and Original Nespresso machines. It is also worth mentioning that Vertuoline machines do not have built in milk frothers.

It is entirely possible a future model will have a built in frother, and if it does, well try to be the first to give you an update about it!
