The Best Coffee Beans For Your Drip Coffee Maker
The coffee brewer itself is just one part of the process. And while a drip coffee maker requires far less gear than, say, an espresso machinea good set of paper filters is really all you need to get startedfresh beans are still a must. Should you go for the single-origin Rwandan coffee that promises snippets of chocolate and tangerine? Or is a blend better? Do you need to know at what altitude the beans grew? Is a low-acid light roast strong enough to get you through the morning?
Like it or not, youre going to get bombarded with options when buying coffee beans. Not every label is a guarantee of quality, but the more a producer or roaster can tell you about the coffee, the better, said Jesse Kahn, whos in charge of training center development for Counter Culture Coffee, based in Durham, NC. Here are some of Kahn’s best tips for getting beans that yield the best coffee.
First things first: Buy whole beans. Grinding coffee right before you brew is the key to a great cup, said Kahn .
Theres no shortage of coffee at the supermarket, but itll be up to you suss out the quality from the swill. When you buy directly from a roaster, you get knowledgeable staff and tasting opportunities. The coffee is probably fresher too. There are companies like Trade Coffee that have relationships with various roasters around the country and offer both quality and variety.
What About Regular Pre
If you want to just use the regular old Folgers pre-ground coffee in your french press than youll do just fine except your coffee will not taste anywhere as good as it could taste and youll have a lot of sediment in your cup too.
When you use pre-ground coffee grind your coffee will always be a bit stale because its packaging date has long passes and the sediment in the bottom of your cup will make it taste overly strong and a bitter. Even still this option may be better than using your old drip coffee maker.
If you are open to spending a bit of money there are some dual filter french presses like the Espro Press P5 that are pretty good at getting as many fines out of your coffee as possible which may make those pre-ground coffees taste a bit better.
Bodum Chambord French Press
The Bodum Chambord has a glass carafe, which could be a drawback for two reasons. One, theres a risk of breaking the beaker. Two, single-walled glass isnt known for its insulating powers, so the coffee doesnt stay warm in the pot for very long. Enter a stainless-steel French press. We like the SterlingPro for its double-walled thermal carafe, which is comfortable to hold and easy to clean . It also has nice touches like clearly marked measurements inside the carafe. An extra double-screen filter prevents grit from getting into the coffee and avoids the potential bitterness that can happen in French press brewing when you let the coffee sit atop the grounds for an extended period.

Our Drip Coffee Maker Testing Methodology
I have around a decade’s worth of experience in the specialty coffee industry. Before testing and reviewing coffee products I worked as a barista, helped open a cafe, and worked behind the scenes in packaging and distribution. For additional expertise, I spoke with Max Gaultieri, barista, roaster and founder of Joules and Watts coffee in Malibu California, and Jessica Rodriguez, who heads the Certified Home Brewer program at the SCA. The coffee makers in this guide were thoroughly tested based on the following objective criteria:Build quality: While testing, I paid attention to the quality of the build, most notably what each coffee maker was primarily made of, I also noted which type of carafe each used and whether they were thermal or glass kept warm with a heating plate.
Brewing capacity: For this criteria, I simply noted the maximum brewing capacity for each coffee maker. The machines I tested ranged from 8 to 12 cups of brewing capacity
Ease of setup and use: To test this, I followed the manufacturer’s instructions for setup and operation for each coffee maker. During the setup, I paid close attention to how easy each coffee maker was to set up and use and whether there were any awkward controls or components on each machine.
Type of filtration: Each coffee maker uses either a reusable filter paper filters, or has the ability to use either.

Types Of Coffee Makers Explained
Learn about the 16 different types of coffee makers here. Illustrated guide and photos with details on how best to use each type of coffee brewing system.
Starbucks, the worlds biggest coffee chain with 27,000 stores, sells a whopping 4 billion cups of coffee a year. Thats a lot of coffee.
But get this 2.25 billion cups of coffee is consumed around the world EVERY DAY. I figured Starbucks sold a lot of coffee, and they do, but its a pittance compared to overall coffee consumption.
The reality is most of the world cant afford expensive Starbucks coffee. Most people make their coffee at home with their own coffee maker resulting in millions of many different types of coffee makers being sold every year worldwide.
Ive bought a lot of coffee makers in recent years, mostly as research for our coffee maker series and Im still amazed at how many different types of coffee machines there are as well as the number of different options for each type.
You can buy a coffee machine to make every type of coffee imaginable at home, for a fraction of the cost you pay at Starbucks and other coffee houses. That makes the $100 or few hundred dollars you spend on a coffee machine a great investment. After all, its not the cost of the machine that hurts, its the cost of the coffee you buy for it year after year. But buying and making coffee at home is still way cheaper than buying it at a coffee shop.
Below is our list of the different types of coffee machines.
Automatic Drip Coffee Makers
Single-serve coffee makers fall under this umbrella. These machines are the simplest to use:
- Load up with your pod or ground coffee
- Make sure the water reservoir is full
- Press âbrewâ
Unless the machine has advanced settings you lose a lot of control over the brew â such as temperature and extraction rate â but the convenience is undeniable. Preset everything the night before and enjoy a hassle-free cup of Joe in the morning.
Automatic drip coffee makers are also great for brewing large quantities, and many single serve brewers now have the ability to brew full pots with a single pod.

Rancilio Silvia Pro Espresso Machine
As we said, its tricky to find an espresso machine that is appropriately pressurizedand one that heats water to the right temperature for making espresso. Brevilles machines do both. Temperature is controlled with a PID controller that keeps it consistent, and it has a pressure gauge so you can tell if youre hitting the optimal zone for espresso . It also comes with a built-in grinder that lets you grind directly into the portafilter, which is certainly convenient.
Why Should I Buy An Electric Coffee Maker
Electric coffee makers may seem overly complicated and expensive when compared to manual brewing devices like the French press, or a pour-over. Electric coffee makers excel when it comes to consistency. “Both methods use the same variables to extract coffee. One difference with electric coffee makers is there isn’t the human variable,” Rodriguez says, “A coffee machine is programmed to do the same thing every time it is turned on, and if it is a good machine, it will do this very consistently.” Electric coffee makers also often have features such as timed brewing, which can save time in the morning if your schedule is tight.

Whats The Difference Between Original And Vertuo
When scrolling through a list of Nespresso machines, you will see them sorted into one of two categories: Original or Vertuo. The difference is that Original machines make espresso and espresso-based drinks, while Vertuo machines brew drip-style coffee along with the brands signature espresso. The VertuoLine was introduced in 2014, exclusively in North America at first, but it expanded to other parts of the world following its popularity. Each category uses its own specific type of capsule which is not compatible with the other line.
Is French Press Coffee More Caffeinated
It’s logical to assume that French press coffee is more caffeinated than standard drip coffee. After all, it certainly tastes stronger when brewed properly. But in actuality, French press coffee is less caffeinated than both drip and pour-over coffee. This is primarily because the grounds used are larger than that of other brewing methods and, as a result, don’t extract as quickly. The exact caffeine content depends on the number of scoops used.

Do You Have A Coffee Grinder Already
If you prefer freshly ground coffee you have two options: Choose a machine with a built in grinder or buy a separate one. While coffee makers with in-built grinders are generally more expensive than brewers without grinders, it might still save you money over buying a separate grinder. Additionally, having both machines in one will save counter space.
But standalone coffee grinders are generally do a better job of grinding, and you can grind for other brew styles. Some coffee drinkers claim having a separate grinder is a must for the best flavor and the best size coffee grounds.
If youre a stickler for the absolute best, or you want to experiment with other brew styles: buy a separate grinder.

How Do You Clean A Coffee Maker
Besides removing external dirt, stains and dust, all coffee makers require periodic deep cleaning. Specifically, their internal water heating systems should be descaled regularly. Some manufacturers instruct you to do this with a vinegar-and-water solution. Others don’t specify except to say to use a store-bought descaling solution. For example, Technivorn says to use products like Durgol to descale its machines.
