Not every label is a guarantee of quality, but the more a producer or roaster can tell you about the coffee, the better, said Jesse Kahn, whos in charge of training center development for Counter Culture Coffee, based in Durham, NC. Here are some of Kahn’s best tips for getting beans that yield the best coffee.
First things first: Buy whole beans. Grinding coffee right before you brew is the key to a great cup, said Kahn .
Theres no shortage of coffee at the supermarket, but itll be up to you suss out the quality from the swill. When you buy directly from a roaster, you get knowledgeable staff and tasting opportunities. The coffee is probably fresher too. There are companies like Trade Coffee that have relationships with various roasters around the country and offer both quality and variety.
What About Regular Pre
If you want to just use the regular old Folgers pre-ground coffee in your french press than youll do just fine except your coffee will not taste anywhere as good as it could taste and youll have a lot of sediment in your cup too.
When you use pre-ground coffee grind your coffee will always be a bit stale because its packaging date has long passes and the sediment in the bottom of your cup will make it taste overly strong and a bitter. Even still this option may be better than using your old drip coffee maker.
If you are open to spending a bit of money there are some dual filter french presses like the Espro Press P5 that are pretty good at getting as many fines out of your coffee as possible which may make those pre-ground coffees taste a bit better.
Bodum Chambord French Press
The Bodum Chambord has a glass carafe, which could be a drawback for two reasons. One, theres a risk of breaking the beaker. Two, single-walled glass isnt known for its insulating powers, so the coffee doesnt stay warm in the pot for very long. Enter a stainless-steel French press. Our Drip Coffee Maker Testing Methodology
I have around a decade’s worth of experience in the specialty coffee industry. Before testing and reviewing coffee products I worked as a barista, helped open a cafe, and worked behind the scenes in packaging and distribution. For additional expertise, I spoke with Max Gaultieri, barista, roaster and founder of Joules and Watts coffee in Malibu California, and Jessica Rodriguez, who heads the Certified Home Brewer program at the SCA. Do You Have A Coffee Grinder Already
