Three: Serve Over Ice

How To Make Cold Brew Coffee At Home

Good news, the hardest part is over. Wilson describes the rest of the process as simply: Coffee in, ice over the top, milk, stir, but lets break that down a bit. Your shot of coffee goes in the bottom of a glass. Now its time to add the ice. You want to fill the glass between a third and a half with ice, to cool the coffee down. Your first few cubes will melt quickly, because of the heat of the coffee. The alternative method is to blend the ice, but this has its own pitfalls. As Harley says: Blended drinks just change the dilution of the coffee, so blending the ice with the milk and espresso turns it more into a slushie. If people want to blend the ice, they might want to consider increasing their espresso, maybe adding another double, so that once blended it tastes more balanced. But Im more of a cube purist. I like just to have a chilled drink, and not a blended one.

Cold Brew Vs Regular Iced Coffee

If youre not a coffee fanatic, you may be wondering exactly how cold brew differs from your regular, run-of-the-mill iced coffee. Is it worth the extra time it takes to brew? In my humble opinion, yes! Homemade cold brew is:

  • Smoother and more full-bodied than regular drip coffee. The oils and sugars are extracted, while bitter or sour notes are left behind.
  • Less acidic. Its up to 60% less acidic than drip, making it gentler on your stomach.
  • Strong: Cold brew is concentrated. You can dilute it with as much water or milk as youd like.
  • Easy to make: Combine coffee grounds and water, brew overnight, and strain. Thats all!

How To Make Frothy Coffee At Home

Cold coffee is popular because of its frothiness and strong flavor. To make frothy coffee at your home, start with making froth for your coffee. Take a jar, and add cold milk in the jar.

You can also add some ice cubes in the jar if you like. Keep the jar halfway full so that there is space to build foam. Now, put the lid on and shake the jar. Shake the jar until froth starts to form and doubles in volume.

You can also froth cold milk if you have a blender or a hand-held frother. A blender jet will help build volume to the foam. Froth the milk with the blender and quickly serve it.

  • Instant Coffee: Use your preferred instant coffee brand such as Nescafe or Bru. Instant coffee comes in finely ground or granulated form. Both of them work.
  • How strong? Add more instant coffee to 1.5 or 2 tablespoons if you prefer a stronger, slightly bitter taste in your cold coffee.
  • Foamy: If you want a foamy coffee, don’t blend the coffee for too long.
  • Adjust Sweetness: If you’re going to add ice cream, whipped cream, or chocolate sauce, reduce the amount of sugar in the coffee.
  • Cold Coffee with Ice-cream: Make your cold coffee creamier and indulgent with a dollop of vanilla ice cream on top or blend it in with the milk.

Equipment For Cold Brew Coffee

Since the popularity of cold brew has grown in past years, there now exist quite a few different gadgets to help you make it. Luckily, its entirely possible to make it using tools you probably already have in your home. For this tutorial, you will simply need:

A large pitcher or jar. Really, almost any kind of container will work, as long as it holds at least 1.5 quarts. I have a 1/2 gallon mason jar that I use exclusively for my cold brew.

Small mesh sieve/strainer. This will provide one layer of filtration, but its not enough on its own.

Coffee filter or cloth. Youll need an additional layer of filtration to line your strainer. Do not skip this, or your cold brew will turn out sludgy . You have a few options here:

  • Basket-style paper coffee filter.
  • Reusable cloth coffee filter.
  • Nut milk bag.
  • A few layers of cheesecloth.
  • Clean handkerchief.
  • Other lint-free kitchen towel.

This recipe is quick, easy, budget-friendly, and tastes just like the gourmet coffee-shops, if not better!

When you live in California, you have a ton of options for great coffee. But whe you start hitting all the hottest coffee shops around town, it gets to be quite expensive. At one point, I ended up splurging on a $10 latte at Alfreds Coffee!

But as always, nothing beats the homemade version taste-wise and money-wise. And with this easy perfect iced coffee recipe, you wont have to overpay for coffee ever again.

All you have to do is brew your coffee the night before using good-quality coffee beans. That way, it can come to room temperature by the time the morning comes around. Now I have personally never been a fan of pouring hot coffee over ice but if it doesnt bother you, then you can whip this up in the morning its up to you!

Then you can whip up a batch of simple syrup, but only if you need it. A batch should last you for a few weeks, unless you like to douse your coffee in sugary goodness. No judgment here. Then you can add a splash of milk or half-and-half, although I highly recommend the latter.

Now you can skip the hectic Starbucks line and have quality coffee for a quarter of the price right at home!

As Phillips gently reminded us, coffee extracts oil. Its tasty, but can turn your clean carafe filthy over time. I would bet 90 percent of carafes you brew coffee into right now are dirty enough to the point of being able to taste it in the cup, he said. People dont realize how often and thoroughly they should be cleaning equipment. Rather than giving your carafes a quick rinse with water, scrub them thoroughly with soap and hot water to pull out those oils.

At the end of the day, it all really boils down to taste, and the experts agreed that whatever your preference makes the best cup of coffee for you. Things like acidity and taste vary by region, and Lindberg even offers up her recommendations for which coffees from Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica she thinks pair more deliciously than others. Its all a matter of preference.

But yeah, good water, a grinder and a scale seem to be pretty important, too.

Can You Put Hot Coffee On Ice

Foodinary

Technically, you can simply pour hot coffee over ice. But I wouldn’t recommend it!

The ice will water down your coffee, and it won’t get as cool either … and perfect Iced Coffee needs to be quite cold.

If you’d prefer to make your drink with hot coffee, then I’d recommend using coffee ice cubes instead of regular ones … that way your coffee won’t be diluted and watery tasting. To make coffee ice cubes, simply fill an ice cube tray with leftover coffee, then freeze overnight.

In the morning, stir a few coffee ice cubes into your freshly-brewed coffee. The cubes will cool off your coffee without watering down the flavor like regular ice would. Once your coffee has cooled, stir in sugar and milk to taste, then top off with regular ice or more coffee ice cubes.

How Do You Make Hot Coffee Cold Fast

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages around the world. It is consumed daily by millions of people. Coffee is usually served hot but if you want to drink it cold, you can put it into the refrigerator. However, if you want to enjoy your coffee immediately after making it, you can freeze it. To freeze coffee, pour it into ice cube trays and place them in the freezer. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a plastic bag and store them in the freezer until needed.

Brewing Tips: Stronger Is Better

The most important factor for making good iced coffee at home is strength. A common error people make when brewing iced coffee is using the same recipe they would use to brew hot coffee and then adding ice at the end. The problem with this method is the ice cubes melt and water down your coffee resulting in a weak, bland cup.

One way to avoid weak iced coffee is to make coffee ice cubes, but another way that we prefer is to make your coffee stronger from the start. Most hot coffee recipes recommend using between a 15:1 and 17:1 water-to-coffee ratio. For iced coffee, we like to use more coffee and typically aim for between a 12:1 and 15:1 water-to-coffee ratio.
