Above all, our hot matcha latte can warm the body and provide comfort to our souls!

Ingredients For Almond Milk Matcha Latte

To make this homemade matcha latte, all you need is 4 simple ingredients:

  • Matcha powder: This comes ready in a package, consisting of Japanese finely ground green tea. It has a slightly bitter flavor and vibrant green color from the leaves’ high chlorophyll levels. You just have to sieve it before adding hot water in order to get it to dissolve more easily. That gives it a smooth finish instead of a clumpy one.
  • Hot water: This helps to dissolve the matcha tea powder more easily. It works best when a small amount is added and then whisked to get rid of clumps. Then more hot water can be added to the cup and mixed well.
  • Almond milk: Although you can use any milk you have at home, plant-based milks like almond milk and coconut milk make for a dairy-free drink low in carbs while providing good flavor and creaminess.
  • Torani Sugar Free Coconut Syrup: This is the sweetener of choice, with zero calories per fluid ounce, making it easier to stick to our New Years resolutions.

Iced Almond Milk Matcha Latte (Paleo, GF)

Theres honey in this. Thats not vegan, right?

Right, adding honey to this drink doesnt make this totally vegan. If youre looking for it to be completely plant-based, just sub agave.

My matcha was clumpy. What happened?

If you have a mesh strainer, you can also pour the matcha latte through it to remove clumps. I am usually too lazy to get it out in the morning, which is why I just let it settle for a second and then pour carefully enough so that the little clumps just stay put in the bottom of the jar.

Can I make this into a hot matcha latte?

You can, you totally can. TBH, I cant stomach matcha green tea lattes when theyre hot. Just too much of a green plant steaminess in my face. But it totally works that way if you like it.

The house is still. Its the quietest it has been in weeks, with the exception of the dog snoring, washing machine gurgling and the roomba vacuuming on the other side of the house. Now that the kids are back in school, I have grand plans of being very productive and meeting a friend or two for coffee.

But heres the thingif we meet for coffee, I probably wont order coffee.

Somehow, over the course of the last year, my beverage of choice whenever I go to a coffee house is a matcha green tea latte, made with almond milk, foam art a pretty bonus. I love the earthiness of it, how cozy it is to sip as I chat, and since it feels slightly mysterious, I used to assume it was the kind of drink that would be hard to recreate at home.

But its not. I started making my own matcha lattes at home during the holidays, and while my foam art leaves much to be desired, the mystery has been debunked its really easy to make!

How many of you guys are coffee drinkers?

If I had to guess, I would say somewhere around 75%. Us non-coffee drinkers are definitely the minority, right?

I get it, a strong cup of coffee can make you feel like you could carry ten baby elephants across the Sahara Desert on your back. Who wouldnt want that?

Unfortunately it doesnt work that way for me. Its so bitter that I have to dilute it with a bunch of creamer, then between the acids in the coffee and the saturated fat in the cream, my stomach turns so much that I dont know whether to pass out or puke. I much rather save those calories for muffins, thanks!

I might not be a coffee drinker but I often enjoy a nice cup of green tea . I love it because the flavor is mild and calming, yet it has enough caffeine to give me a little energy boost. And the best part is that I can drink it unsweetened, without any creamer, and enjoy it just the same. Which means I get to eat more MUFFINS, mwuahaha! )

Ahem, so I first discovered matcha almost ten years ago, when we lived back on the east coast and were visiting a small town in Connecticut. We stopped into a cute little café and as soon as I saw that beautiful bright green milkshake on the menu, I knew I had to give it a try. Ever since then Ive been hooked.

This cool and creamy Copycat Starbucks Matcha Latte Recipe brings all the sweet and earthy flavor to the comfort of your own home! Its a super easy iced matcha latte recipe, you can make in less than 5 minutes!

I love a good latte whether its a classic almond milk latte, soy milk latte, or even a lavender tea latte. Matcha green tea lattes have become all the rage lately!

What is matcha? Matcha is a powder made from green tea. Unlike green tea, which comes in a tea bag, matcha is a powder you stir in hot water or milk.

Its a healthy alternative to coffee or other high caffeine drinks. It is earthy in flavor. Sweetened and served over ice, its a refreshing summer drink!

The Starbucks matcha latte has been on the menu for quite some time. Maybe youve enjoyed it yourself, or seen people walk out of Starbucks with an interesting bright green drink, and wondered what it was they were drinking.

Since a grande Matcha Latte at Starbucks can run you $4 or more, 200 calories, 5 grams of fat, and 28 grams of sugar, I thought I should try making my own healthier version at home.

This frothy drink recipe is so easy, and only requires a few simple pantry ingredients! Its also all-natural, lower in sugar, and lower in calories.

When Should I Drink Matcha

Matcha contains as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, and even if it also contains calming amino acids, it can energize some people too much.

As a result, its better to drink Matcha in the morning, so it doesnt interact with your sleep.

Matcha is a great swap to coffee in the morning, but like coffee, it slows down iron absorption, so dont ever drink green tea on your vegan journey.

Latte Ingredients And Notes

Matcha Powder: When you buy matcha powder there are two types youll find. Ones that include added sugars and other ingredients, and ones that are purely matcha powder. Get the type that is pure matcha powder, no extra stuff! You can find it online, at Whole Foods, or in Asian markets.

Dairy-Free Milk: I used unsweetened almond milk for my recipe, but I also recommend oat milk, soy milk, or light coconut milk. Oat milk and soy milk will allow the flavor of the matcha to shine through. Whereas youll taste an undertone of coconut if you choose to go with coconut milk.

Maple Syrup: You can add more or less than one tablespoon of maple syrup in the recipe. However, I recommend starting with one, tasting, and adding more if you think it needs more sweetness.

Vanilla Extract: The vanilla extract gives a slight hint of vanilla flavor that youll find in the Starbucks version.

Best Milk For Matcha: The Bottom Line

Matcha goes well with coconut, almond, oat, and soy milk as they do not cancel out matchas unique and tender flavor and rich nutty aroma. Coconut milk is by far the most popular milk used for matcha latte. However, you can add any other plant-based milk that you like. Do not add cows milk or any other dairy to matcha as it will destroy the taste of the matcha and alter the way your body absorbs matcha nutrients.

How To Make A Latte

Ever wanted to make a homemade latte, but don’t know how? I gotchu in today’s post!

You don’t have to have a fancy milk steamer!

If you’re like me here’s what ya do!

That’s it

Start by heating up your almond milk, sugar, matcha powder and almond extract over medium heat on the stove.

Is Matcha Latte Vegan

No, a classic Matcha latte or a regular Starbucks Matcha latte is made with dairy milk. Therefore it contains cow milk, and its not vegan friendly.

However, drinking Matcha from your favorite café on a vegan lifestyle is very easy.

Ask the barista to use your favorite dairy-free milk. I love coconut milk with Matcha.

These two flavors are made to be together.

Nut Free Milk Options

Recipe: How to Make Matcha Latte with Almond Milk

If you aren’t able to drink nut milk, there are more great options available! For this matcha latte, I recommend swapping almond milk with oat milk, as it is a super creamy alternative. You can also use rice milk, hemp milk, or coconut milk .

Because I want to know exactly what’s in my milk of choice, I’ve got great homemade plant-based milk recipes. Yet Simple Green Smoothies also did the legwork to help you find out exactly which store brands are best for oat milk too.

Tips For Making The Perfect Matcha Latte

When it comes to making the perfect matcha, the trick is in the ratios and method. If you dont have the right ratios , its possible that your matcha latte will be too weak and watery, or alternatively too strong. In addition, if you dont whisk properly, its possible that your matcha latte will be clumpy, not smooth.

The ratio :

The ratio I use for making the perfect matcha latte is 1 tsp quality matcha to 3/4 cups hot water. Then, I add 1/2 cup almond milk.

I find this ratio to be perfect for creating a full-bodied matcha latte thats not too strong nor weak. See the recipe instructions below for more details on how to put this ratio together.

Its important to keep in mind that the quality of your matcha matters. It will result in a smoother consistency, and less bitter taste. Which in turn will require less sweetener to mask the bitterness. In fact, the best quality matchas dont require any sweetener at all! Its a little more expensive for a quality matcha, but I promise the matcha is worth the whisk. Plus youll save a lot more by making matcha at home vs. a daily trip to Starbucks.

Of course, its up to you to choose your favourite matcha brand, but my favourite brand of matcha is made by From the Reserve, and I have a discount code for 30% off. You can find that in the Shop section of my website under Discounts.

The Health Benefits Of Matcha Green Tea

  • It relaxes the body and mind
