Do You Froth Milk For An Iced Latte
If youve ordered a hot latte from a coffee shop, then you know that hot, frothy milk is poured into a cup with espresso. Great baristas often make pretty latte art with the steamed milk.
But for an iced latte, theres no need to froth your milk. The reason for this is because hot milk will melt your ice. So you want to use cold milk for iced lattes.
Using cold milk means that making iced lattes is much faster than making hot lattes since you dont have take the time to steam the milk. Plus! Theres no extra clean up of the milk steamer.

How To Make The Best Iced Coffee Of Your Life
Starbucks iced coffee, who?
The hashtag #icedcoffee has over 1.7 billion views on TikTok. And with summer well on its way, more and more of us will be eagerly searching for the best ways to make a glass of the stuff, pronto.
With that in mind, we asked coffee expert and Modern Standard Coffee founder, Lynsey Harley, how to make the best iced coffee, ever!
How Do You Make Iced Coffee?
It’s easy, really. All you need is a tall glass filled with ice, brewed coffee and some vanilla syrup . Mix it all up and there you have it! A decadent glass of homemade, no-fuss iced coffee.
Whats The Difference Between Iced Coffee And Cold Brew?
Iced coffee is, well, icedcoffee. It’s as simple as serving regularly brewed coffee over a glass full of ice. But if you want to get a little more technical, Lynsey says, Iced coffee is made with espresso thats brewed for around 25 seconds.
Cold brew is a little less straightforward and requires a lot more time. Rather than simply serving regularly brewed coffee over ice, cold brew involves leaving course ground coffee steeped in cold water for a minimum of 12 hours.
The longer the coffee sits, the stronger the flavour.
Lynsey describes cold brew, as a concentrate, that you dilute with whatever you want milk, water or tonic.

Iced Coffee At Home: 3 Ways
There are a couple ways you can make this iced coffee recipe.
- The first is to brew a standard pot of coffee, allow it to cool, and then refrigerate it until youre ready to make the drink. If you go this route, I recommend increasing the amount of ground beans you use because youll want a stronger brew that can stand up to the addition of both ice and coconut milk.
- The next option is to start with cold brew coffee. I personally havent tried this method, but you can check out this tutorial on how to make cold brew coffee if youd like to go that route. The advantage of this method is, of course, that the coffee is already chilled, and it makes a decent sized batch so youll have enough for several coffees.
- The final option is to use an espresso machine or something like the Ninja Coffee Bar for a true iced latte. We dont own an espresso machine, but I have been really happy with the Ninjas specialty brew option, which delivers a very strong, concentrated, 4 oz brew that is similar to espresso. They also have an iced coffee option, but I prefer to make the specialty brew and then chill it.
Whichever way you choose, youll want 4 ounces of strong brewed coffee, preferably chilled.
Brew Your Coffee As Usual
Brew your coffee as you normally would. Allow a bit more ground coffee if using regular ice cubes to make the drink stronger.
As for volume, that depends on the serving size.
Generally iced coffee comes in a large cup, but the cup is filled with ice more than halfway.
So if you were to serve in a 12 oz/354 ml cup, and half of it would be ice, you’d only need about 6 oz/177 ml of actual brewed coffee.
Keep in mind that some ice will melt and raise the drink level, so the final product will be a bit more than your expect.

A Little Lesson On Lattes
Before we jump into the instructions on how to make an iced latte, lets learn a little bit about the drink itself. Having decent foundational knowledge will help you tinker with the recipe and make perfect lattes.
A latte is simply coffee and milk. Known as a cafe latte in Italy, where it was originally made, it directly translates to milk coffee. Big companies have shortened the name to simply latte. While most shops you go to will make a latte with espresso, the name suggests that you can use any type of coffee or coffee extraction. Lattes are also typically prepared with steamed milk for a couple of reasons: mouthfeel and flavor. The steamed milk adds a creamy texture to the drink when properly steamed. It also stretches the milk, releasing sugar enzymes and effectively sweetening the drink.
For an iced drink, we wont be steaming the milk because the iced latte has a feel all its own. It could also be a bit of a health risk, as theres a small risk that steamed milk could grow unhealthy bacteria when introduced to the ice.
Now that we know all this, we can see that the iced latte is a pretty simple drink. The most important part is the coffee itself, as everything else is added after the coffee is brewed. So, lets make an iced latte!

Best Coffee To Use In Iced Coffee:
Here is the deal Because you are playing the part of barista, YOU are in control over the coffee you use. There is no right or wrong when it comes to brewing the perfect iced coffee beverage.
That being said, I am going to share some of my more favorite options.
- Cold Brew- If you like your coffee on the more mild and smooth side, try cold brew. This can be bought in large bottles, or made from scratch!
- Your favorite coffee, brewed like normal.
- Coffee brewed with an Aeropress This is almost like a more concentrated coffee. So you get that bold flavor without the need of an espresso machine.
- Espresso shots- If you like to go bold, go bold with a shot of espresso. Its strong enough that watering it down with milk and ice wont hinder the flavor much.
Whichever method you decide, make sure to chill the coffee before pouring over your ice.

What Type Of Coffee Should I Use
Like any cup of joe, you should choose high-quality coffee beans to make the coffee for your iced coffee recipe. I swear this is not a plug for Lavazza but I love their dark roast coffee. You can buy the beans on their own and grind them using a coffee grinder at home, or you can buy pre-ground coffee your local grocery store. It’s up to you!
I will often try to go to my fave local cafes as well and buy their house blends, or pick up some coffee from Starbucks. That way you get the same taste of your favorite coffee place without having to spend $5 per drink!
What Is Iced Coffee
Iced coffee is pretty much what the name says. Literally coffee that’s been cooled with a whole lot of ice. This is actually one of the few non-confusing coffee type names out there.
Depending on who you ask, iced coffee may use several types of coffee – as in, brew styles.
Most commonly, it’s espresso based.
Not because it’s better, but it’s the strongest tasting version and the ice’s really going to water the whole thing down.
You can bypass this by using coffee ice cubes. Literal ice cubes made of coffee, but few of us remember to do that beforehand.

Making The Iced Vanilla Latte
Vanilla lattes are so easy to make and you dont need to splurge on an expensive vanilla bean to get good flavour with this syrup. Like the rest of the syrups here, the formula is pretty straightforward. Make a plain simple syrup by mixing boiling water and sugar together, then add in your flavouring of choice.
For this vanilla latte, I used plain old artificial vanilla extract but you could use the more expensive pure extract or opt for the vanilla bean if you can find them. But really, the vanilla latte is the easiest of all to make. Like the machiatto, start with an empty cup full of ice. Brew two espresso shots and pour them over the ice, then stir in 1 cup of milk and add vanilla syrup to your taste. Yum!
