Coffee And Your Heart

Does Coffee Raise Blood Pressure? Time To Clarify The Confusion

Coffee is made from the roasted beans of the coffee plant. It contains a high level of caffeine, but there’s more to it than that. Coffee contains over 1,000 different chemical compounds, some of which may reduce your risk of stroke.

Among those compounds are carbohydrates, proteins, oils, and minerals that your body needs to stay healthy, like magnesium and chromium. These minerals can lower blood sugar and insulin, thus helping protect against diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Coffee is also rich with antioxidantsmolecules found in healthy foods that protect your cells from being damaged by free radicals.

Your body produces free radicals when you are exposed to air pollution, cigarette smoke, and other toxins. Over time, free radicals can damage your blood vessels, leading to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

In theory, drinking coffee could benefit your heart. But that might depend on how you prepare it.

Eliminating caffeine from your diet has several benefits. You might find that you sleep better, have less nausea, and eventually notice that your energy lasts throughout the day. A few days after you stop drinking caffeinated beverages, you no longer rely on the drug to keep you awake.

It wouldnt take much to shift the attitude of the general public towards decaf coffee. Marketers would have to shift their focus on the cool-factor of drinking caffeine to the benefits of avoiding caffeine. Imagine how different the world would be if we all drank decaf instead of regular.

Drinking Coffee With High Blood Pressure

From a coffee addict suddenly turn into high blood ...

For most people, moderate consumption of coffee is unlikely to have a negative effect on long-term blood pressure or cardiovascular disease.

As with any food, drink or activity, too much of anything may lead to negative effects. The studies and research above evaluated typical coffee consumption up to 5 cups per day. Regardless of their finds, they caution not to drink excess coffee or caffeine with high or uncontrolled blood pressure.

Before changing any of your habits, it would be wise to have your blood pressure under control first. As in any case, its always best to confer with your physician about drinking coffee.

Coffee should not be compared to caffeine. Coffee has many other ingredients like polyphenols, potassium and soluble fiber. These ingredients may have a beneficial effect on blood pressure and the cardiovascular system. This leads me to my next section on caffeine.

How Many Calories In Decaf Coffee

If you drink your coffee black, you are drinking a calorie-free beverage. Black coffee also does not have any fat or protein either. If you add creamer, whipped cream, sugar, or other extras, you add calories, fat, and a bit of protein depending on how much you add.

But if you drink fancy coffee beverages from popular restaurants, you can trust that they have quite a bit of calories and sugar.

Can Decaf Coffee Be Bad For Health

Studies on decaf coffee show no evidence that it is in any way detrimental to a persons health. These studies have shown that it has the same benefits as regular caffeinated coffee, sans caffeine, jitters, anxiety, digestive issues, and high blood pressure. Some new studies are showing that there is a small chance decaf coffee can help protect against heart disease and type two diabetes. One study says that decaf coffee can help slow fat production and enable a slow and steady weight loss. All of these smaller studies aside, the hard, cold, proven facts all agree that decaf coffee will not adversely affect your health.

May Increase Blood Pressure Temporarily

Science suggests that the physiological effects of drinking coffee can extend beyond a small dose of wakefulness. Research indicates that it may increase blood pressure for a short time after consumption.

A review of 34 studies showed that 200300 mg of caffeine from coffee approximately the amount youd consume in 1.52 cups resulted in an average increase of 8 mm Hg and 6 mm Hg in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively .

This effect was observed for up to three hours after consumption, and results were similar in people with normal blood pressure at baseline and those with pre-existing high blood pressure.

Interestingly, regular coffee consumption is not associated with the same impact on blood pressure which may be due to the caffeine tolerance that develops when you habitually drink it .

Based on this data, a small to moderate increase in your blood pressure may occur after drinking a cup of coffee especially if you drink it infrequently.

Summary

Research indicates that coffee may increase blood pressure for up to three hours after consumption. However, if you drink it regularly, this effect is diminished.

Coffee Tips To Consider For Blood Pressure

  • Always check with your physician first in regards to coffee consumption.
  • Never drink coffee prior to checking your blood pressure in the morning because it will raise it.
  • If you have a doctors appointment, dont drink coffee prior to your visit.
  • Its best to wait about 6 hours or more before checking your blood pressure later in the day or evening.
  • Take notes, along with your BP readings, about when you consumed coffee last and how much was drunk.
  • Before exercise avoid drinking coffee. Exercise by itself can raise your BP, adding coffee at the same time may increase it more.

Fatty Acids Rise In Decaf Drinkers

Decaffeinated Coffee High Blood Pressure

After three months, there were no significant changes among the three groups in levels of bloodinsulin, glucose, and blood pressure, which are major risk factors for heart disease.

Levels of apolipoprotein B were up significantly in the decaffeinated group while staying relatively unchanged in the other two groups. The amount of ApoB has been suggested in other studies to be a better predictor of cardiovascular disease risk than one’s LDL “bad” cholesterol level. This follows the notion that ApoB levels reflect the amount of smaller LDL particles, which are thought to be more sinister.

There was one group for whom decaf appeared to be heart healthy: the overweight. For those who had body mass indexes of more than 25, drinking decaffeinated coffee boosted levels of HDL “good” cholesterol by about 50%. Among those with lower BMIs , HDL dropped 30%. Elevated HDL is known to protect the heart.

“This illustrates to the public that this is not a simple story of one coffee is good, one coffee is bad,” Superko says.

Robert Eckel, MD, president of the American Heart Association and a cardiologist at the University of Colorado College of Medicine in Denver, tells WebMD that he admires the researchers for putting coffee drinking to such a rigorous scientific test. But based on this one finding, “we should not change our coffee drinking habits in America,” he says.

So Is Good Coffee Good For You

Going by what weve covered so far, you might have guessed that its hard to assess the effects of coffee on health in part because theres so much variability in the contents of different types of coffee. Deciphering coffeeâs effects is further confounded by how differently individuals respond to coffee. This variation depends on factors such as a persons genetics, health, and whether he or she habitually consumes coffee. Caveats aside, lets look at some of the relevant research.

One way of assessing the potential effects of coffee intake on health is to ask people how much coffee they usually drink or have them track their diets for several days and then monitor their health over several years. While this type of study design has many limitations â not the least of which is how accurately people report their diets â it can help identify potential diet-disease relationships. And where this type of research has unveiled possible associations between coffee consumption and health, well briefly consider mechanisms that might underlie these effects.

How Decaffeinated Coffee Raises Blood Pressure Compared To Caffeinated

Like I mentioned, coffee has many ingredients besides caffeine. Is it the caffeine alone raising short term blood pressure? If it was, then logic would say, decaffeinated shouldnt raise BP in the same way.

The following studies didnt show much of a difference on blood pressure between drinking caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee. The increase in blood pressure seems to be associated with the ingredients in coffee other than caffeine. The short-term increases in blood pressure may happen when drinking regular or decaf.

In a study people were given three different options, a triple espresso, a decaffeinated triple expresso and an injection of equal caffeine. Their effects of blood pressure were measured, and the results may surprise you. The caffeinated expresso raised systolic BP 13 mmHg on average. The decaffeinated expresso raised systolic 12 mmHg. The caffeine injection raised systolic just 6 mmHg 12.

In this study, researchers analyzed 45 people who were considered regular coffee drinkers. They were given 5 cups of caffeinated each day for six weeks and then they were switched over to decaf for the next six weeks. The results showed a small decrease of -1.5 mmHg systolic and -1.0 mmHg diastolic when drinking the decaffeinated coffee 13.

Coffee May Help Reduce Risk For Heart Failure

Drinking one or more cups of coffee a day may reduce the risk of heart failure, according to new research. But only if it’s caffeinated.

The analysis of data from three large, well-known heart disease trials was published Tuesday in the American Heart Association journal Circulation: Heart Failure. It found the more coffee people drank, the lower their risk for heart failure. But that benefit didn’t extend to people who drank decaf.

“The association between caffeine and heart failure risk reduction was surprising,” senior author Dr. David Kao said in a news release. Kao is an assistant professor of cardiology and medical director at the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora.

“Coffee and caffeine are often considered by the general population to be ‘bad’ for the heart because people associate them with palpitations, high blood pressure, etc.,” he said. “The consistent relationship between increasing caffeine consumption and decreasing heart failure risk turns that assumption on its head.”

But don’t reach for a refill just yet, Kao said. “There is not yet enough clear evidence to recommend increasing coffee consumption to decrease risk of heart disease with the same strength and certainty as stopping smoking, losing weight or exercising.”

Across all three studies, people who drank more coffee had a lower long-term risk of heart failure.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is recorded as two numbers – the systolic pressure which indicates the force at which your heart pumps blood around the body, and the diastolic pressure which records the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels.

Too high blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher.

Heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and kidney disease are just a few of the potentially life-threatening conditions caused by hypertension, if its left untreated.

Your doctor may recommend taking one or more medicines to keep your high blood pressure under control. But some scientists believe a number of natural remedies can be used to help lower hypertension – including decaf coffee.

Remember what you put in your coffee also can affect your health. What is more important is not the caffeine in coffee, but the extra ingredients folks add to spruce it up, Dr. George says.

Sugar, artificial sweeteners, and heavy cream all can potentially add lots of calories or are linked to other risk factors, such as excess weight or type 2 diabetes, ultimately negating the benefits of coffee, according to Dr. George.
