Iced matcha lattes have grown in popularity over the last few years. With matcha being used in everything from drinks to baked goods, its a tasty and nutrient-rich ingredient that people love. But what exactly is matcha? And what is involved in an iced matcha latte?

Mixing Or Frothing Matcha
To make iced matcha lattes, the first thing you have to do is mix matcha powder with hot water. Now, this might sound easy, but due to the superfine texture of matcha, you have to watch out for clumps!
There are also traditional tools to make matcha that aid in blending the matcha powder with hot water properly, like a bamboo whisk and a matcha bowl . But if you dont have these at your disposal, you can also use a handheld frother and a small bowl. You may be able to use a small whisk if you dont have a frother, but you may get clumps.
Whats important is you need to use hot water and to make the process easier, I like to use my kettle. After the water is done boiling, add the matcha to a small bowl and add one tablespoon of water to start. Then, whisk the mixture.
Move your hand in circular motions around the small bowl to incorporate all the powder into the water and add additional water if necessary. Try not to add too much water since it will dilute the tea. The matcha is fully whisked when there are no clumps and it has a slight frothy consistency.

Easy Tweaks To This Dairy
You can use any dairy-free milk that works for you
- From almond milk to oat milk to cashew milk. This recipe is vertile, so you can use whatever works best for you.
You can change around the sweetener too
- I like using honey, but if you want this drink to be Vegan, you can use maple syrup or brown sugar.
- You can also try maple sugar, or date syrup. YUM.

Latte Ingredients And Notes
Matcha Powder: When you buy matcha powder there are two types youll find. Ones that include added sugars and other ingredients, and ones that are purely matcha powder. Get the type that is pure matcha powder, no extra stuff! You can find it online, at Whole Foods, or in Asian markets.
Dairy-Free Milk: I used unsweetened almond milk for my recipe, but I also recommend oat milk, soy milk, or light coconut milk. Oat milk and soy milk will allow the flavor of the matcha to shine through. Whereas youll taste an undertone of coconut if you choose to go with coconut milk.
Maple Syrup: You can add more or less than one tablespoon of maple syrup in the recipe. However, I recommend starting with one, tasting, and adding more if you think it needs more sweetness.
Vanilla Extract: The vanilla extract gives a slight hint of vanilla flavor that youll find in the Starbucks version.

Is There Caffeine In Matcha Latte
Matcha contains three times as much caffeine as regular tea, equivalent to coffee in terms of caffeine content. The l-theanine in matcha, a compound that incites relaxation without drowsiness, has a calming effect, which matcha enthusiasts say is different from caffeine buzz.
It’s best to give up caffeine six hours before bed to aid in restful sleep.
What Do The Bananas Taste Like In This
Let me note that you can taste the banana in it. So if you are a person that hates banana, don’t use it. Freeze canned coconut milk in an ice cube tray instead and pop a couple of those in your latte.
But, the banana flavor is not overwhelming. Most of what I taste in this latte is the rich flavor of the matcha, the creaminess of the nondairy milk , and the sweetness of the date.
The banana also adds to the sweetness a little bit, so you may try experimenting with the amounts if you find it too sweet.

Do You Need To Sift Matcha Latte
A freshly sifted matcha tea latte is lump-free and smooth to drink. This is truly a wonderful beverage. Having said that, has this step been skipped due to laziness or rushing? Yes! Was it the end of the world? Definitely not. You can enjoy it even without sifting, but obviously with a compromise on the richness of this delicious drink.

You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make a matcha latte at home!
- Matcha powder. This is my go-to organic matcha powder from Amazon.
- Milk. I like to use 2% or whole milk for a creamier latte, but feel free to use your favorite cow’s milk or milk alternative.
- Simple syrup. Simple syrup is perfect for iced lattes because it mixes nicely with cold liquid. I like to make a batch of simple syrup and keep it in my fridge for when I need it. It’s just a mix of water and sugar. Recipe is provided in the the recipe card below.

Theres honey in this. Thats not vegan, right?
Right, adding honey to this drink doesnt make this totally vegan. If youre looking for it to be completely plant-based, just sub agave.
My matcha was clumpy. What happened?
If you have a mesh strainer, you can also pour the matcha latte through it to remove clumps. I am usually too lazy to get it out in the morning, which is why I just let it settle for a second and then pour carefully enough so that the little clumps just stay put in the bottom of the jar.
Can I make this into a hot matcha latte?
You can, you totally can. TBH, I cant stomach matcha green tea lattes when theyre hot. Just too much of a green plant steaminess in my face. But it totally works that way if you like it.
Picking Matcha For Your Latte
Its important to note that there are also various types of matcha powder to buy depending on what you need it for. Here are two top variants:
- Ceremonial: premium and high-standard quality matcha. Its typically very very dark green and has a rich, grassy flavor, but it is not bitter. Its main purpose is for drinking as a tea so you can fully appreciate the slightly sweet flavor. This is typically more expensive because of the quality.
- Culinary: made for cooking and baking, this matcha type isnt necessarily lower in quality, but has a different flavor profile. Its more bitter in flavor and its bright green color makes it a great option for pastries and sweetened drinks with milk.
There are also smaller variants since the quality of matcha is a spectrum like cafe, classic, ingredient, and more. Each of these titles vary by brand, so make sure to check the descriptions before purchasing. For this recipe, we used Jade Leaf Culinary Matcha because it was available locally.

What Kind Of Matcha Should I Buy
There are so many variations of matcha out there these days! I like to look for brands that clearly disclose their sourcing. The matcha should be a bright, vibrant green color. If it is dull or olive/brown in color, it has likely been oxidized.
I recently discovered Golde Pure Matcha and Im obsessed! It dissolves super well and the flavor is delicious.
What Sort Of Matcha Powder Am I Looking For
If you are trying matcha for the first time, I’d recommend a premium grade powder to see how you like it. You can always upgrade later.
Traditionally, matcha is made with a bit of hot water and it is whisked in a small bowl with a special bamboo whisk, then added to more hot water.
I personally prefer, and many people do, to make my matcha with nondairy milk. I also make my lattes in a pretty unconventional way, which we’ll talk about next.
