Mormons On The Margins

The Goal: A Story of Faith, Friendship and Forgiveness

Steve Evans, a 46-year-old attorney who helps run the Mormon website By Common Consent, said many fellow Latter-day Saints are energized by Nelsons revelations.

People feel like this is very dynamic time in the church, he said, and when you have a president who speaks openly about being led by God, that is very exciting. You feel like you have a purpose and that things are going in a positive direction.

But Evans also said that Nelsons revelations raise certain tensions in the church. When a president calls his decision Gods will, that essentially ends any argument. Other Mormons revelations are often, if not always, expected to align with his priorities.

That top-down style can lead to polarization within the church, particularly among millennials who take a more DIY approach to spirituality, said Mica McGriggs, a psychologist and community activist in New York City.

You see more and more young people saying, You cant just tell me the answers. I have to figure them out for myself, said McGriggs.

Whats more, its hard to be a prophet in the age of the iPhone, when any statement can be fact-checked in real time.

And while orthodox Mormons feel blessed to have a strong figure heading the church, McGriggs said, Mormons on the margins are more wary.

Theres this middle ground where less orthodox members are living, McGriggs said. And its like the church is drawing a line in the sand, youre either on the Lords side or you are not.

News release from the Church Newsroom Changes to Emphasize the Correct Name of the Church of Jesus Christ

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the name of the Church Latter-day Saints believe came by revelation from the Lord Jesus Christ Himself . Jesus Christ directed us to call the Church by His name because it is His Church, filled with His power, President Russell M. Nelson has said.

The Church is now making changes to many of its communication channels to reflect the faiths full name and better convey commitment to follow Jesus Christ. More than getting the name right as an institution, the invitation to use the full name of the Church is an opportunity for Latter-day Saints to refocus their lives on the living Christ.

Every day we should ask ourselves, How can we better live as Jesus Christ taught and lived? President Nelson said. This mindset will help fill our lives, our homes, our neighborhoods, and our churches with more of Christs light and power.

The changes the Church is making apply to many aspects of Church communications. Four areas are of note for Latter-day Saints and the general public:

Websites: The Churchs official website will become ChurchofJesusChrist.org. A History Of The Name Of The Church

Latter-day Saint scripture and history show that getting the Churchs name right has been an evolving process from the faiths earliest days. In the Book of Mormon, for example, Christs disciples could not agree on what to call the Church. Christs answer was to take upon you the name of Christ. In 1830 the Church was organized as the Church of Christ. The Church adopted a resolution in 1834 to change the name to the Church of the Latter Day Saints to distinguish it from other Christian denominations of the time. Then in 1838, the Lord Jesus Christ revealed to Joseph Smith that the name of the Church is to be the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Over the years, the Church standardized the spelling and hyphenation of its name, making it The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as it is used today.

Since the first year of the Churchs founding, critics and others have sought to call the Church and its followers by other names names Latter-day Saints used out of convenience at first but then came to embrace themselves. Its hard work to undo nearly 189 years of history, culture and practice. But with God the impossible is possible. As President Nelson made clear in August 2018, we have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with will. Church leaders understand that this is a complex, multifaceted effort.

Moses In A Business Suit

Lots of religions talk about revelations. They fill much of the New Testaments last book and many parts of the older Hebrew Bible, from the burning bush that inspired Moses to the still, small voice who whispered to Elijah.

But many modern believers consider both Bibles to be closed canons, the last words well hear from God before the final trumpet blows. Its not that these religions consider prophesy passe. They just think the era of prophecy has passed. Even Pope Francis speaks of discerning Gods will, but rarely of revelations.

Latter-day Saints, as they prefer to be called, believe in continuing revelation. Their canon is open, ready to be revised or supplemented by its top cadre of leaders, first among whom is the churchs president, who is considered a prophet, seer and revelator. In some circles, Nelson is called, simply, the Prophet.

Matthew Bowman, a historian and author of the book, The Mormon People, said the view of the president as a prophet has risen since the 1970s, as the faith has grown and church leaders have become spiritual celebrities of sorts.

Its an attempt to emphasize the authority of the president of the church, Bowman said.

But while few modern religions seem to blend pragmatism and prophecy quite so seamlessly, the Mormon churchs often mild-mannered and institutionally minded presidents rarely match the biblical image of prophets as wild-haired social critics who feed on locusts and honey.

After finally getting her twin babies to fall asleep in Rexburg, Idaho, Kristine Anderson described herself as a stereotypical, Mormon stay-at-home mom.

Then she sighed loudly, annoyed that a lifetime habit had slipped out.

Ugh, she said. I just said the word Mormon again. I apologize.

Last August, leaders of her faith announced a game-changing divine revelation. Russell M. Nelson, the churchs president, said that God had impressed upon my mind the importance of the name he has revealed for his church. Church members should no longer call themselves Mormons, or even use the shorthand L.D.S., the church announced.

The word Mormon has been with the church from the beginning. It comes from the Book of Mormon, the churchs signature text , which adherents believe was recorded on gold plates by the prophet Mormon and his son, Moroni.
