Brigham Young’s Later Years

Saturday Mornings

The church had attempted unsuccessfully to institute the United Order numerous times, most recently during the Mormon Reformation. In 1874, Young once again attempted to establish a permanent Order, which he now called the “United Order of Enoch” in at least 200 Mormon communities, beginning in St. George, Utah on February 9, 1874.In Young’s Order, producers would generally deed their property to the Order, and all members of the order would share the cooperative’s net income, often divided into shares according to how much property was originally contributed. Sometimes, the members of the Order would receive wages for their work on the communal property. Like the United Order established by Joseph Smith, Young’s Order was short-lived. By the time of Brigham Young’s death in 1877, most of these United Orders had failed. By the end of the 19th century, the Orders were essentially extinct.

Brigham Young died in August 1877. After the death of Brigham Young, the First Presidency was not reorganized until 1880, when Young was succeeded by President John Taylor, who in the interim had served as President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Honor The Symbols Reverence

The Intellectual Property Division is working to educate members to understand the intent of the new symbol. A large part of that effort is a focus on reverence.

The symbol has biblical roots in the Apostle Pauls metaphor in Ephesians, which describes how the Church is built upon the foundations of apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone . Depicting Christ under an arch serves as a reminder of His emergence from the tomb three days after His death.

Theres a real desire to honor the reverence of the content of the symbol, Broadbent said. We wouldnt be using it in areas that dont lend themselves to preserving that kind of dignity and that kind of reverence for the Savior.

He continued, People love it. They want to use it. They want to relate to it. The guidelines being developed will hopefully help members feel that connection.

Saints And Symbols: Former Church Designer Has Something To Say About New Lds Logos

Graphic designer Randall Smith, owner of Modern8 Design, shares his opinion on the latest symbol and logo designs recently introduced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The new, digitally friendly logo unveiled April 23, 2020, for The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. It will be the sixth logo since 1903.

New symbol of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unveiled April 4, 2020, by President Russell M. Nelson.

The emphasis The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has put on the name of the church came full circle during Aprils General Conference with the introduction of a new symbol to identify the faith.

President Russell M. Nelson unveiled the Thorvaldsen statue of the Christus, a statue that has become iconic to the church, as part of that new symbol or logo.

However, at least one designer believes the symbolism should have been more in keeping with the modern church as it moves forward in time rather than staying in the 1800s.

Randall Smith, owner of modern8 in Salt Lake City, said he is not surprised the church settled on the Christus.

Its a very safe logo, Smith said. Its sweet, safe and expected but not progressive.

A church statement concerning the new church symbol said, This new emblem emphasizes the name of Jesus Christ and His central role in all the Church does.

The symbol portrays the resurrected, living Lord reaching out to embrace all who will come unto him, Nelson said.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints had no consistent, comprehensive visual identity until 1974 when Randall Smith and his team designed this logo. Im fond of it, despite it being a sort of half-eaten typographic layer cake. Maybe its just because I grew up with it but I also loved the old PricewaterhouseCoopers logo and that was even more ungainly.

It uses Baker Signet, a typeface designed a decade earlier by Arthur Baker for VGC. Baker is known for his vigorously and while Signet certainly shows signs of a pen, it is has a calmer, more traditional classical roman air than most of his designs, especially when seen in all caps. Slight modifications were made for the logotype, such as an extension on Bakers reticent J. The letters are well suited for the granite inscriptions that often label LDS meeting houses and temples.

In 1995, the church decided that this design was too corporate , but more importantly they wanted to clarify that they are a Christian religion. They replaced the design with a more staid treatment emphasizing the words Jesus Christ. There are slightly conflictingreports about the 1995 design, but the consensus seems to be that it was designed by Adrian Pulfer and McRay Magelby with a proprietary typeface by Jonathan Hoefler called Deseret.

The Promised Return Of Truth

During the Great Apostasy, people lived in spiritual darkness. About 1,700 years after Christ, people were becoming more interested in knowing the truth about God and religion. Some of them could see that the Church Jesus had established was no longer on the earth. Some recognized that there was no revelation and no true authority. The time had come for the Church of Jesus Christ to be reestablished on the earth. This time was foreseen in scriptures that prophesied the loss of the truth and its eventual return . This restoration of truth was also in keeping with the Lords promise, as recorded in the Old Testament: I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder .

Tithing And Other Donations

Church members are expected to donate one-tenth of their income to support the operations of the church, including construction of temples, meetinghouses, and other buildings, and other church uses. Members are also encouraged to abstain from food and drink on the first Sunday of each month for at least two consecutive meals. They donate at least the cost of the two skipped meals as a fast offering, which the church uses to assist the poor and needy and expand its humanitarian efforts.

All able LDS young men are expected to serve a two-year, full-time proselytizing mission. Missionaries do not choose where they serve or the language in which they will proselytize, and are expected to fund their missions themselves or with the aid of their families. Prospective male missionaries must be at least 18 years old and no older than 25, not yet married, have completed secondary school, and meet certain criteria for physical fitness and spiritual worthiness. Missionary service is not compulsory, nor is it required for young men to retain their church membership.

Unmarried women 19 years and older may also serve as missionaries, generally for a term of 18 months. However, the LDS Church emphasizes that women are not under the same expectation to serve as male members are, and may serve solely as a personal decision. There is no maximum age for missionary service for women.

More Focus On Jesus Christ

In the 1990s, Church leaders decided to revamp the Churchs identifier, desiring more emphasis on the name of Jesus Christ. McRay Magelby, who at the time was BYUs creative director, said that the goal was to create something that was more legible, less corporate looking, and had a more warm, friendly, inviting feel.

Graceful curves make it more approachable than a fancier type, Magleby said. We wanted it to look non-designedas it might appear on a building at the time of Christrather than modern.

The Church tested different versions that separated the name of the Church into several lines of texteven up to five separate linesbut ultimately decided on three, with Jesus Christs name appearing in larger text on the central line. This logo was released in 1995.

The font for this logo was custom designed by a well-known typographer, Jonathan Hoefler, and named Deseret. It was based on the letters found on the famous Trajans Column in Rome. The letterforms in the name of the Church of Jesus Christ therefore date back almost to the time of Christ Himself.

The new logo design lended itself relatively well to being translated into many languages, although in many languages the logo takes up four or more lines of text. Over a decade ago, the Church reached the milestone of having the wordmark in 100 languages.

The Church Will Never Be Destroyed

The Goal: A Story of Faith, Friendship and Forgiveness

Thousands of years ago, the Lord said He would set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, . . . and it shall stand for ever . The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that kingdom. Although there have been periods of worldwide apostasy in the past, the Lord has promised that His Church will remain until Jesus Christ returns to reign personally on the earth. As members of the Church, it is our privilege to enjoy many blessings, to share those blessings with others, and to prepare for the Saviors coming.

Culture Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter

The basic beliefs and traditions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have a cultural impact that distinguishes church members, practices and activities. The culture is geographically concentrated in the Mormon Corridor in the United States, and is present to a lesser extent in many places of the world where Latter-day Saints live.

In some aspects, Latter-day Saint culture is distinct from church doctrine. Cultural practices which are centrally based on church doctrine include adhering to the church’s law of health, paying tithing, living the law of chastity, participation in lay leadership of the church, refraining from work on Sundays when possible, family home evenings, and home and visiting teaching. The church also emphasizes the moral standards that Mormons believe were taught by Jesus Christ, including personal honesty, integrity, obedience to law, chastity outside of marriage, and fidelity within marriage.

The majority of Latter-day Saints live outside the United States. Therefore, even though the global differences are important, there are some common traits around Latter-day Saints worldwide.

Cosmology And Plan Of Salvation

The Mormon cosmology and plan of salvation include the doctrines of a pre-mortal life, an earthly mortal existence, three degrees of heaven, and exaltation.

According to these doctrines, every human spirit is a spiritual child of a Heavenly Father, and each has the potential to continue to learn, grow, and progress in the eternities, eventually achieving eternal life, which is to become one with God in the same way that Jesus Christ is one with the Father, thus allowing the children of God to become divine beings that is, gods themselves. This view on the doctrine of theosis is also referred to as becoming a “joint-heir with Christ”. The process by which this is accomplished is called exaltation, a doctrine which includes the reunification of the mortal family after the resurrection and the ability to have spirit children in the afterlife and inherit a portion of God’s kingdom. To obtain this state of godhood, the church teaches that one must have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of his or her sins, strive to keep the commandments faithfully, and participate in a sequence of ceremonial covenants called ordinances, which include baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, the endowment, and celestial marriage.

Priesthood Keys And Authority Returned

God again gave the priesthood to men. John the Baptist came in 1829 to confer the Aaronic Priesthood on Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery . Later in the same year, Peter, James, and John, the presidency of the Church in ancient times, came and gave Joseph and Oliver the Melchizedek Priesthood and the keys of the kingdom of God .

Later, additional keys of the priesthood were restored by heavenly messengers such as Moses, Elias, and Elijah . Through these events, the priesthood was returned to the earth. Those who hold this priesthood today have the authority to perform ordinances such as baptism. They also have the authority to direct the Lords kingdom on earth.

History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter

The history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is typically divided into three broad time periods:

  • The early history during the lifetime of Joseph Smith which is in common with most Latter Day Saint movement churches,
  • A “pioneer era” under the leadership of Brigham Young and his 19th-century successors, and
  • A modern era beginning around the turn of the 20th century as the practice of plural marriage was discontinued.
  • During the 20th century, the church grew substantially and became an international organization. Distancing itself from polygamy, the church began engaging, first with mainstream American culture, and then with international cultures, particularly those of Latin America, by sending out thousands of missionaries across the globe. The church became a strong and public champion of monogamy and the nuclear family, and at times played a prominent role in political matters. Among the official changes to the organization during the modern area include the ordination of black men to the priesthood in 1978, reversing a policy originally instituted by Brigham Young. The church has also periodically changed its temple ceremony, gradually omitting certain controversial elements. There are also periodic changes in the structure and organization of the church, mainly to accommodate the organization’s growth and increasing international presence.
