Less Cabin Noise Courtesy Of A Long List Of Updates

2022 Acura MDX – INTERIOR

Interior styling hasnt changed much since the RDXs 2019 redesign, but the updated luxury compact SUV improves with a fresh front fender liner minimizing road noise and the updated Active Sound Control system to further repeal exterior hubbubs from infecting the interior environment.

The engineers also lowered the engines cold idle speed from 1100 rpm to 950 rpm and fixed a new lower torque rod on two-wheel-drive variants to suppress engine shakings.

Below, a quick 2020 versus 2022 RDX interior comparison:

Left: 2021 RDX Vs Right: 2022 RDX

For a quieter cabin, Acura offers the Technology Package. It adds new, thicker carpet padding and a new sound insulator on the front doors as well as acoustic glass to further decrease road and wind sound. Moreover, a new and denser noise insulation pad in the dash cuts the engine sound, and a modern insulator in the D pillar shrinks the road noise.

Acura says if customers want to get their hands on the quietest RDX in history, then opt for the Advance Package. It comes with an extra sound insulator in the ceiling and yet more noise insulation included in the dash, under the hood, and across the drivetrain tunnel.

Acura has added an insulator and acoustic glass at the back doors, and the cargo bins get sound insulation. Besides, the rear hatch inner covering receives more sound muting stuff.

Acura Mdx Interior Review

Redesigned for 2022, here’s a closer look inside one of the best-selling 3-row SUVs in North America.

The MDX is a premium offering and the look, feel and layout of the passenger cabin reflects this. As Acuras flagship the MDX needs to impress, and there is a nice mix of textures and materials used to evoke a sense of quality and luxury.

If youre also considering the smaller RDX, heres our interior review of that.

The leather seating and door panels feature distinctive stitching and piping, while real wood inlays compete with black piano and alloy pieces to attract the eye. The overall look is visually appealing and upmarket.

Acura Mdx: What’s It Missing

Although undoubtedly improved over the last MDX, the 2022 model’s interior lacks the completeness of other luxury three-row SUVs. For as nice as its first row is, the seats behind feel utilitarian. Depending on the buyer, that may not necessarily be an issue. Family drivers might appreciate the tough-built materials and straightforward approach. But for them, absent features like power-folding seats or standard third-row USB ports seem like obvious omissions. Against three-row SUVs with improved premium appeal, the MDX hardly distinguishes itself.

For drivers who want a luxury SUV as a posh conveyance for themselves and some friends, the MDX’s interior lacks panache. It’s not a cabin in which to welcome guests to sprawl out or woo with indulgent features and trimmings. Potential future inclusions like second-row captain’s chairs could help change that, but until then the MDX doesn’t have the, well, luxury to keep it in contention against other luxury three-row SUVs.

Acura Mdx First Look Review: Sporty And Sophisticated

2022 Acura MDX in Middletown, NY

The all-new SUV focuses on performance as much as premium features.

The Acura MDX has evolved from a humble crossover to a stunning luxury SUV with a gorgeous design that manages to be both bold and classy. It’s one of the best-selling offerings from the Japanese outfit, and although it has shared much with the cheaper Honda Pilot, it’s certainly a much more attractive offering. For the 2022 model year, the MDX has been totally overhauled, and it’s got the substance to go with all that style on the surface. It is thus worthy of being the brand’s flagship model, and because it’s built on an all-new platform “designed for new levels of performance”, it should be better than ever.

Performance For Every Challenge

The redesigned 2022 MDX houses a 290-HP81V-6 engine paired to a double-wishbone front suspension for precision cornering. Handling is further enhanced by the Integrated Dynamics System, including a new Lift mode for Type S, while available wider 21-in alloy wheels ensure adrenaline-inducing performance.

The Latest Mdx Gets Its Best Upgrades Yet Without Losing What Made It Such A Hit In The First Place

The Acura MDX needs no introduction. You see them all over the place. It’s a staple of the luxury crossover market, it makes up a significant chunk of Acura’s sales, and it’s generally well-regarded by its buyers and critics alike. What it’s not, however, is sexy, flashy or inspiring at least, not the way competitors from BMW or Mercedes-Benz tend to be. That hasn’t stopped the MDX from being the best-selling three-row SUV of all time, but it’s achieved that milestone in kind of a quiet and circumspect way, without overwhelming horsepower or a badge that screams “I’m rich and you’re not.”

So after 20 years on sale now, you can’t blame the reliable MDXor more specifically, the engineers at Hondafor feeling like a mid-life crisis was on the horizon. Though it basically helped invent the segment it’s in, the MDX is a bit staid. Boring. Not really an attention-grabber. Perhaps some hot young thing came along to capture everyone’s hearts and minds, putting the respectable MDX in need of some reinvention. Just not the embarrassing kind, like the dad who gets an earring or starts a Pearl Jam cover band with the other dads he knows from soccer practice.

And it’s pretty fun to drive, too, for a three-row crossover.

Standard Seems To Be The Buzzword

There are a whole host of features included on the 2022 MDX, which are dubbed standard. And a lot of them are pretty swank features most automakers charge extra for. Things that make the list include a panoramic moonroof, wireless charging, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and traffic jam assist.

Acura Mdx: 6 Things To Know About This Next

2022 Acura MDX SH-AWD

Acura unveiled its 2022 MDX this week, and it looks pretty darn sexy for a three-row SUV inside and out. This is a next-gen vehicle, and it takes the styling cues pioneered by the RDX to the next level.

We recently got a sneak peek at this all-new vehicle when Acura showed off its MDX Prototype back in October. Now we get full details, including a starting price of $46,900, which is $2,400 more than the outgoing model.

Here are the key things to know about the 2022 MDX.

Exterior: Bold But Beautiful

Acura calls this “the most emotionally styled MDX ever”, and although that sounds like a lot of marketing mumbo jumbo, the MDX does appear to have been designed with some passion. There are plenty of clear nods to the Acura Precision Concept that inspired this new design, including an intricate front grille and hood.

In terms of dimensions, the new vehicle carries a 2.8-inch longer wheelbase than before at 113.8 inches. This will mean better rear legroom and better cargo-hauling capacity, while a 1.4-inch wider stance will improve handling. The wheels have also swelled by an inch to 19s, while a standard panoramic roof and highly-detailed LED taillights make this a looker from any angle.

Sebastian jumped straight into the workplace after high school. Various vocations in sales, logistics, and project management helped him buy and modify several cars over the years, while his passion for motoring journalism saw him contribute to local print media while running car enthusiast clubs. But in 2019, the opportunity to join CarBuzz arrived. Originally handling reviews of new cars, his love of the technical led to writing detailed blog posts on various aspects of car care and ownership. He currently handles news sourcing, writing, and editing, along with social media management and the clarification of patent lingo. In his spare time, he’s either reading, driving, or looking to collect more BMW Performance parts for the E82 and E9X platforms.

Mdx Trunk And Cargo Space

2022 Acura MDX Redesign

The more significant overall length and increased wheelbase have had a drastic effect on cargo capacity. Seats in all three rows are adjustable, which means you get a standard cargo capacity and a maximum capacity with the seats moved forward. With all three rows in place, the MDX provides 16.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity. While the third row does not slide forward, the available space increases to 18.1 cubes when you include the under-floor storage. With the third row folded flat, you have 39.1 cubes to work with, rising to 48.4 cubes with the second row moved forward. Fold both the third and second-row flat, and you get 71.4 cubes. Slide the front seats forward and it increases to a colossal 95 cubes of space.

Interior storage space, as you’d expect in a family-sized SUV, is excellent. Besides the usual glovebox and well-sized door pockets, there are two large cupholders for front occupants, a slot ahead of this for your smartphone, and a covered center console armrest with a small tray on top and a larger compartment beneath this. In the second row, there are seatback map pockets and the middle seat can fold down when not in use, revealing two cupholders and a cutout where you can store two smartphones.

Acura Mdx: Tech Features And Headaches

Between the 12.3-inch gauge cluster and infotainment displaysboth standard across the rangethe MDX is adorned with literal feet of digital real estate. Yet, Acura’s True Touchpad infotainment interface, which relies on a trackpad instead of a touchscreen, remains in need of improvement. Like in other Acuras, it requires finesse, patience, and too much focus away from the road. That the entire right third of the screen is devoted to basic redundant information, all controlled by its own smaller trackpad, seems like suboptimal design. At least wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work consistently, and the Advance model’s 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D audio system sounds fantastic.

Acura’s first all-digital gauge cluster, dubbed Precision Cockpit, earns higher praise. It’s bright, crisp, and clear, with slick graphics and animations. Driver assist system status, SH-AWD torque split, and real-time fuel efficiency are only a few of the data points it can show, but hopefully future over-the-air updates will add capability and customization. A full-screen map or more distinctive layouts for various drive modes would put it among the best digital gauge clusters, but it’s not quite there yet.

Acura Mdx: Cargo Area

2022 Acura MDX Tech Quick Walk-around

Let’s start at the back. Pop the powered tailgate to find a 16.3-cubic-foot cargo area, slightly larger than the one in the previous MDX. There’s also a wide underfloor storage bin with a removable, flippable cover. On one side the cover is carpeted on the other, it’s hard plastic so dirty cargo doesn’t soil the upholstery. Other conveniences include a small deployable bag hook, a 12-volt power outlet, and a one-touch close and lock button.

Cargo capacity increases to 39.1 and 71.4 cubic feet behind the second and first rows, respectively. This MDX may be new, but its seats still fold the old-fashioned way: manually and individually. Whereas some three-row competitors offer powered rear seats, the MDX relies on levers and buttons. Tried and true those may be, but there are times when hitting a switch and letting motors do the work would be a saving grace the MDX can’t provide.

Mdx Gets A Big Screen Too

One standard item not mentioned above: the 12.3-inch ultra-wide, high-def infotainment screen. This is paired with a 12.3-inch behind-the-wheel digital cluster.

Along with the new big screen, Acura has upgraded the True Touchpad Interface with a more powerful CPU and physical power, volume and seek controls.

What’s New And Improved

I’ll preface this by saying that with traditional press launches still suspended over COVID-19 and in-demand new models like this one only getting short loans to automotive writers, my time in the new MDX was limited to a couple of days. But it’s clear that these changes have caused quite a transformation.

Patrick George

The new, Ohio-built MDX no longer shares a platform with cars like the Honda Accord and Odyssey. It’s on an all-new light truck platform, exclusive to Acura, and a real emphasis has been placed on performance this time around. Acura’s been trying to get its groove back lately after a decade and change of being unable to meet tougher challengers from all sides with various whatever re-badged Hondas. That effort started with the second-gen NSX, and the brand says it’s trickling down to the rest of the lineup.

Acura

Though it may not look obviously or radically different from the last one, the new MDX gets a 32 percent stiffer body structure larger and more powerful brakes a new multi-link rear suspension and a new double-wishbone front suspension revamped electric steering 10mm wider tires and more distinct differences between the various drive modes, like Comfort and Sport. It’s also several inches longer and wider than before and does much better in the way of standard equipment.
